starting problem

My truck is a 94 2500 4x4. The truck would not start so I checked the fuel shutoff sylinoid. Shure enough it was not working, so I put a new one on. Still nothing so I changed the relay. Still nothing. The truck will start if I manualy lift the shutoff sylinoid, but it's a pain in the butt. I was told that all that stuff ties in with the oil sending unit somehow, could that be the cause. If so, where is it, and any other suggestions would be appreciated.

It's possible that the solenoid itself is bad. I've been stung on trying to replace one componant or the other (relay/solenoid) too long on customers rides so I usually replace both the relays and solenoid when this problem occurs. Better to spend the money than deal with a come back. Do make sure all the circuits of the relay are working properly though. Sounds like they are since you can lift the solenoid up and it remains in the up position.

The shut down solenoid is probably the most needlessly replaced part on a 12 valve, expendsive too. The only ones I've seen fail are when the starter sticks on overheating the solenoid lift up coil. You definitely know it when it happens.
Since you've replaced the relay the next most likely culprit is the blue fusible link wire coming from your driver's side positive battery terminal. Either the link is blown or connection corroded.

I am with infidel check your blue wire, you probably have a spare solenoid and relay if you did not toss them, everyone has been down the road of replace and replace, has your starter been working correctly?? If not bad starter contacts can cause problems. Goodluck and let us know, Rick

Yep, I've had to deal with that darn blue wire too. Luckily I didn't replace any parts before figuring it out.

I had the blue wire corrosion problem on my 95'. I luckily found it before replacing too much.

What happens a lot with the blue wire failure is folks get in there and start replacing other parts in the process moving the wire around till it makes contact again. They think the parts replacement solved the problem but it only lasts till the connection corrodes again.

On the flip side people get a no start after doing any work under the hood that moves wiring around causing a open circuit on the blue wire. Gets perplexing when you have a no start after changing something like the fuel filter following normal procedure to a T.

got it

turns out it was the little blue wire. That thing was totaly roted into. Thankfully my dealer took the new sylinoid back. anyway, thanks for the advice guys. I had to replace the water pump today also. Now every thing is good. And just so you know, the water pump on the new Case IH tractors is the same as on the 94 cummins diesel. Might save you some money? Thanks again guys.

Good to hear you got it fixed, and cheaply too.
Sounds like that dealer is a keeper, be sure to show them your appreciation by shopping there again.

Glad you got it going.
Second that on the dealer. It's unusual to find anyone who will let you bring back electrical parts.
Case tractor dealers are also a good source for low cost Fleetguard filters.

Suggest you replace the starter contacts and overflow valve on your '94 if they haven't ever been done, you'll be set for another trouble free 100k then.

Get contacts here-

and an overflow valve here-
