You need someone to hit the starter with a hammer more like tap the side of it while starting it. Thier is a inexpensive rebuild kit; very easy about $20 dollars. Someone here knows the name of the company online, I'll look for it. Price depends on year of truck,

pulled starter to test and found it loose with an ear broke off, tightened the two left over bolts and got it to start. Needs new starter now.

Don't waste your money on a generic warrantied for life auto parts Chinese starter, you'll be replacing it every 10k.
Spend the money and buy an OEM.

OEM starters are made by Denso. This is the best price I found for a new one. http://www.fleetsource.com/SearchRes...10&Search.y=11

That price is about $100 less than what I've seen anywhere else.
I have to wonder if it's a rebuilt even though it shouldn't make any difference quality wise.

They are new, not rebuilds. I bought one about 10 months ago and there is no way a rebuilder could duplicate the features of a new unit. I did find rebuilds that cost more however.
