Stalled and Dead in Indiana
Hi ALL,
While driving west from Michigan to Chicago, I had the darn thing (2004 Diesel 2400) stall when I took my foot off the gas, and then not be able to restart for more than a few seconds at a time. It was very cold, but I had picked up a quarter tank (to fill up) about 100 miles earlier and had a stop for about 20 minutes at the 50 mile mark. Had to get towed to the nearest dealer, get a rental and went to drill (army weekend). Now that they have have had it a whole day (178 miles from home), they do not know what is wrong, thinking electrical. My thoughts were frozen fuel filter or severly gelled fuel. I read some of the other posts on the 911 product, but wonder if the dealer would not recognize this (gelled fuel or frozen). Anybody have any historical issues or educated swags for me? They have supposedly been working on it for a whole day, without any answers.
Thanks

It could have been frozen up. The dealer pulled the truck in, let it set in the warm shop before working on it. By then it thawed out? Now he can't find a problem.
Or...it isn't running and the dealer can't find the problem?

I am in Northwestern Indiana. PM me if there is anything I can do. I have worked in Chrylser/Dodge dealers for 6 years, and now maintain a fleet of over 82 mostly Dodge. I'll see what I can do! Is it still at the dealer?

Thanks and.....
The truck is at the dealer (Thomas Dodge - Jeep of Highland) in Highland, Indiana.
They tell me that they pushed it in this morning and this afternoon it was still not getting fuel and they were not sure why. They thought there might be a bad fuel pump. What really worried me was that the service adviser made a comment about having to move the pump from where it is to inside the tank??? This does not really sound like a normal TSB. I am getting very worried about the level of competence. Supposedly, they have one Diesel guy and he was in school Friday (the truck was towed in around 4), not coming in Saturday (they asked him but he had plans already), and had been working on it all day today.
Anyone that has ideas or help is welcome.

Highland? I cant imagine the dealership overthere being that diesel inclined. I live about about 30 miles east of Highland of off I-94. The Dodge dealer here services a lot of diesels, mine once, with LaPorte being a rural area.
good intel
Thanks for the information. I will wait till I hear from them Tuesday to see what they do. Does anyone know if the moved fuel pump is a warrenty item??
Totally Rad,
Where is she serving?
I'm at 25 years, 4 deployments and currently in the Reserves North of Chicago. It WAS an interesting drive home Sunday night, back to the Grand Rapids area of Michigan.

I should have some warrenty left as I have had it (since new) for 2 and a half years. It is currently under 50,000 miles.
Got some other comments from PMs and other boards stating that the fuel pump move is a standard practice when it stops working. Still trying to figure out why it happened. Maybe strain from freezing lines or fuel filter? After reading all the items in the help section, I will be carrying an extra filter and some 911, just in case.

The stock lift pumps on the third gens are fickle, to say the least. I've seen guys post theirs went out at 50k and others are still going. If it turns out to not be a warranty item, you might want to start your research now as to an after market replacement. There are allot of good ones and you might as well get some info., just in case.
Well,
The dealer has been working on it all day without success. Supposedly, they have two guys working on it, who are conferring with Dodge Central. Since it has been in the shop for two full days, fuel flow due to gelled or frozen fuel is obviously out. The last conversation I had (around noon today) was that the fuel pump (lifter) was out, and that they were still checking other issues (injector pump?) and getting approval through Dodge to get things done. I am not feeling more confident as I have had to call each time, with only one call from them to me (last night before close) to let me know they were still "hunting it down". I did check in with my dealer today to review my warrenty package and they feel (with the info I shared) that it is covered, and that the rental I am driving is covered for the time being. Reading the policy, I noted that five days of rental was covered (ends Wednesday) which I will have to call to extend at this point. Anyway, from all the info that has been shared, I understand the the lift pumps go out, and that the injector pump could be bad as well. I wonder if a blocked line could have caused these parts to go out (excess strain on the system). I sure hope they figure something out.
