split t-case...
Just got back from pulling my dads truck of the side of a road on a 1200 mile trip fortunatly for him he broke 10 minutes from my house. Anyway t-case is split and the tranny will not go into gear, clutch will release to able it to start but releasing the clutch causes a stall. even though the clutch works the tranny will not change gears nor will the t-case change from 4 low to 4 high neutral etc. Could this have been a 5th gear nut and pilled up? or just a blow up, any body had this issue. Tear down will probably happen this weekend, it need a new clutch anyway

got a chnce to take a look under neath today after work I believe the front drive shaft u-joints took out the tcase as they where really loose.
hopefully the tranny didn't pileup when the t case went we will find out this weekend during teardown.

got around to tearing out the t-case tranny and clutch assembly, looks like the tail end the tranny split looks to be a gear cover and sump area. My guess is the binding the split caused the tranny to lock up, I did see the 5th gear had some damage on one tooth, both the tranny and tcase are getting tore down to inspect. Good time for a clutch change, it was due anyway...
About a year and a half ago, I loaned my truck to a friend, who while driving it down the freeway, had a large bang occur and the truck no longer went forward under its own accord. Looked under truck to see transfer case oil pouring out. The transfer case looked like someone scribed a line around it and cut it in half. Transmission shop that replaced it had never seen anything like it in the 30 years they have been in business. Never did find out what caused it to snap in half the way it did.

in our case it was the front driveshaft u joints that caused the damage, I found the problem and dad fixed part the shaft but he didn't check the back set well enough and they where the bad ones I found he only replaced the single in the front, now it is a possible $4000 set of ujoints
I hope you have better luck in finding a transfer case than my friend did. A new one was not available and it took 3 weeks to locate a used one to refurbish. Still set him back around 2800.00. I don't think mine was caused by u-joints because the case split in the middle, not the output shaft housings.

I'm courious.. How did bad ujoints take out the transfercase? Did the driveshaft come off and break the transfercase? Did the chain fail? I'm not trying to disagree with you but I want to know so I know what to keep an eye on for my truck! Good Luck or maybe I should say Better luck!?

This is the first things 3 mechanics all at different places said when I was looking for a t case/tranny and pricing. As soon as I said I need one because my dads tranny split they said driveshaft did it, makes no sense to me, we actually split the very back of the tranny where the gears are housed the t- case seems to be fine so far
tough to tell what caused it, once the tranny gets its checkup we will know if it was somthing else.
The new, or should I say new to me transfer case was installed using the same u-joints that was on the old transfer case. They were just replaced on the "new" transfer case by me about 3 months ago, or with the mileage on the "new" transfer case at about 40K. Truck now has about 247K on the clock. It had about 200K when the original transfer case went Kaboom.
