speedometer gear troubles on '95 1 ton...
I bought the correct speedometer gear from my local dodge dealer (had a 27 tooth, needs a 31 tooth), and it's not the right one. The truck is a '95 1ton, 5 speed 2wd. The gear I got from them has a steel shaft protruding from the plastic gear about 1 - 1 1/4", and the one I need has a steel shaft that's closer to 2 3/4 or 3". Anyone have any idea if they gave me the wrong part, or does my truck have the wrong tailshaft housing? If it's the wrong housing, does anyone know what housing I have?
The housing looks pretty clean, as if it's a new one or was from a donor truck and had been cleaned up really well. My truck had a gear vendors O/D in it, but the P/O kept it to put in his new truck.
I have the old gear out and the hole plugged w/ a capplug so I can take it in and show them what I need. I also wrote down the part # on the gear holder that goes into the tailshaft housing in case that would help them.
If anyone can help, I be grateful!!!

There is only one gear dimension for the 3500. Make sure your housing was rotated to the proper orientation for the tooth count and the gear should slip right in to the proper depth.
It is possible that a tail shaft housing was used from a GM truck, but if so the longer torpedo will be available from any GM truck from the mid-80's up through the early 90's.

roating the housing that the gear goes in won't solve this problem. I was wondering if maybe it was a GM tailshaft housing. I'LL ask the dodge dealer parts guy if they ever used a longer shaft speedo gear in the dodge. If not, I guess They'll have to order one for a GM (my dealer deals in both Dodge and GM).
I think I know what's going on now. I talked w/ the mechanic who's maintained this truck since new, and he says that this truck came from the factory w/ the speed sensor and gear holder seperated by a 16" speedo cable. The parts breakdown on dodge dealers computer doesn't show such a thing (94 - 96 was supposed to have a gear holder that the speed sensor bolted to.
Here's the kicker: the nv4500 was available in 92 and 93 trucks, and they used a gear holder / speed sensor like mine has. Our best guess is that this truck, along with others, im sure, got some leftover parts from the 93 model year. My truck was made in late '94, so I'm not too surprised by the whole ordeal... just wished I'd thought of it earlier! The new, shiney tailshaft housing was ordered straight from dodge for a '95, so that the correct part there. I guess I'll find out for sure when the gear comes in friday!!!
