Sorry Guys, Quick Ford Question???

A friends truck has got him stranded. It's an 02 Powerstroke, He says it will run for about half a mile then stalls. If he lets it sit for a few minutes he can drive for another very short distance, but if he bleeds the fuel filter he can go a bit further. He has replaced the filter himself once, and had it done at a Jiffy Lube once, still no luck.

Thanks in advance fror your time and ideas.
Andy

The most popular failure with those symptoms is the Cam Position Sensor. Those are classic signs it has failed. It may be hard to find one on a Sunday though.

Tell your buddy to pick up two of them and throw one in the glove box. They like to fail at the best time. Mine went out on my old 99 7.3 and stranded me for about 3 hours on a Sunday until I got lucky and found someone that had an extra one. Back then it was pretty much a dealer only part, albeit an expensive one! However, I think more parts stores carry them these days at a much better price. Make sure it is black, they also offer blue and I have heard rumors it isn't the correct one.

I've heard of these sensors going bad, but I thought the truck would not run at all without it working? Is this the case?

When my sensor went out it was odd. After clearing the code I made it about a mile or two then it shut down. I cleared again and went about 200 yards. I cleared again went 50 feet. I cleared again and managed to get it to roll to an area on the side of the road and left it until we changed sensors. Sometimes it will throw an SES light, sometimes it will not. If I were you I would be getting a new one right now and getting it in. Even if that is not the case, you have a new one in and can hang on to the old one for your spare because at some point it will fail.

The short answer to your question is results vary. Some don't run, some do but intermittently.
