Smoke/oil And Crankcase Pressure
Smoke/oil And Crankcase Pressure
Comming home from work the truck start billowing white smoke, a massive cloud. Got home, lifted the hood and pulled the dipstick only to be sprayed with oil there was so much pressure in the case. Looked underneath the truck and oil is all over the bell housing, crossmember, etc. Any ideas what may be happening here?

You have cracked an injector or injectors, or the injection pump is leaking. It'll fill your crankcase with fuel. Smell your oil I bet it smells like diesel.
You aren't by any chance running a pressure box are you?

Yes, I have checked the oil...no evidence of diesel smell. Difficult to tell where the oil is coming from.......not on top of the engine, that's for sure...it's all over the under carrige. My breather tube doesn't appear to be plugged. All that smoke billowing out and the large amount of oil loss is puzzling. I'm stuck out in the middle of a Montana Winter waiting for the tow truck to show up and tow it to the nearest dealer 89 miles away. ****, first time the 'ol truck let me down.
When I pulled the oil dipstick out, there was so much crankcase pressure built up that it sprayed oil out of the dipstick tube....sounded like letting air out of the tire......any idea what would cause that?

Even thought the breather tube doesn't appear to be plugged, it could be.
Is it still running straight down, or have you relocated it, possibly creating a little valley where water could condensate and freeze?

It's being towed in. Hopefully it won't take too long to fix......if it is an injector, how long does that normally take to fix?
Also, is it typical to have oil all over the undercarrige if it is an injector? If so, where would it be coming from?

The reason I new it was an injector is it's happened to me twice. #5 the first time and 1 and 3 the second. It covered the the entire undercarriage with oil. A week each time, STAR has to release injectors.
if you removed the dipstick and got oil spraying out of the tube , then take a look at the breather tube and you should have a good amount of blow-by coming out of the breather tube also , if not , I would bet your problem is a frozen breather tube , not all high blow-by problems roots to injector problems , could be a turbo seal gone or other things like vacumn pump.
