Replaced VB and adjusted bands, now 2-3 shift slips!

Hi, I installed a performance valvebody this weekend and adjusted both bands. Now the shift from 2nd to 3rd hangs for a second and the motor revs up, then it engages. The 1st to 2nd shift is great. Could this 2-3 problem be from a bad band adjustment? I imagine it probably is, do you think it is the internally or externally adjusted band?

Thanks for any advice!

hi
1st thing i would is check fluid level on level ground !

you MUST check it with trans gear selector in N position at idle .

go slowely through all gears first , then stop in netrul for checking !

3rd gear comes on because of fluid psi - low fluid = low psi = slipping !

what vb or vb kit did you use ?

did you install a restrictor orface in the hi gear trans pasage ?
if fluid level is correct then remove the restrictor !

do not accelerate hard till this is fixed or you will soon be pulling the trans !

I read on DTT's site that these trans will momentarily shift back to first on the 2-3 shift if the front (external) band is set too tight. Bill will actually set the front band 1/8 turn looser in certain circumstances. Recheck your band adjustments and make sure you lubricate the set screws before you tighten them to the torque value listed for your set-up.

Hope this helps.........

Thank you both for the replies, they both help.

I installed a Goerend VB. I did install a restrictor orifice. The fluid is correct in neutral at idle on level ground. I didnt adjust the front band by Goerend instructions, I did it by Chryslers instructions. And I erred on the side of too tight vs. too loose, which could cause the problem from what you are saying. I am going to go readjust at lunch and let you guys know. If that doesnt fix it, the orifice will come out.

I have a feeling it is something I did. The VB is a huge improvement, 1st and 2nd act sooooo much better now.

Thanks

Your getting the 2-3 flair, reason is the front band is releasing before the front clutch is engaging. What are Dave's instructions? Vs Chryslers? I'm not super familiar with the 48RE, but I've been in enough 518's and 47RH's to know my way around them.

I would try readjusting it to his instructions and then if that doesn't work, call them and trouble shoot it before you do anything else.

And to answer one of your previous questions, it is the external adjusted band that is giving you the problem.

Read that at your leisure, its for a 727, but the 48RE uses the same basic principals for 1-2-3 gears.
