Question Question On Welded Contacts?

Last tuesday when I fired up I had all the symptoms of having my starter contacts weld (running without the key in the ignition also pulled the starter relay in the fuse box, shutdown soleniod burnt, wire at battery burnt). My question is their any other problem that would cause the same symptoms. The replacement parts are to be here today and was getting started. When I pulled the starter the plunger was back but wasn't sure until I pulled the back off. Now the plunger was back and I could NOT see evidence of where it had been welded together. Although one side of the contacts was 2/3 depleted.

I'm no expert, but a buddy of mine had the exact same thing happen, and after replacing the wire and what not, replacing the contacts seemed to cure the problem.

I don't think they have to be very messed up to stick...

There was a recall on your model year in regards to the ignition switch and heater blower wiring overload. It would cook the ignition switch and also cause these symptoms. Check to see if your truck has had this free repair done to it.

My 96 had this problem and they had to replace the ignition switch and rewire some stuff, of course I had to take it back twice before they did it right, but I researched the repair and knew more than them going in.

Chrysler can tell you if the repair has been done on your truck.

Ditto on the starter contacts, they are a common problem

OK! I hope. Changed out the contacts and solenoid and test fired engine. It shut down when I turned the key to off. Now I'm hopeing it does that from now on.
