pritty sure its fuel related

OK im new to diesel... I went out to warm the truck up this morning and it ran for about 30 seconds and then died. checked the fuel relays they are all good. Cracked the injectors cranked the ignition no gas.... Bad fuel pump???? there is what I believe to be a second pump by the engine it has a drain on the side. It will hum when I try to start but I do not hear the normal pump like I normally do..... If this makes any sense please help...
thanks in advance.
Bryan
Oh yeah its a 99 2500 if that makes a difference.

Ok now that I have a little more light outside I realised its not the waterseparator that vibrates when I turn over the engine its the small pump inline before it.... Is this the main fuel pump??? I need a repair manual but have no way to get one to help me trouble shoot whats going on....

Ok I just pulled the fuel inlet and outlet lines off of the water seperator and cranked the engine. I got zero fuel out of them... So in my thinking even thoagh the lifter pump is vibrating its bad. Is this correct thinking or am I out in left field?

Yes it is possible for the pump to "run" but not pump anything. Instead of cranking just "bump" the starter- the lift pump should run for around 15 sec. This way is much easier on your starter.

Since you pulled the outlet lines and cranked you did suck air into the system but I am afraid you have a bad lift pump anyway.

When you get a new lift pump only open the small brass plug closest to the front of the engine ontop of the fuel filter housing.
Then bump starter until you get fuel out of it. Tighten it up and then bump starter several more times before you crank to fire it up.

FYI- get a fuel pressure gauge.
Your injector pump (vp-44) may go kaput in the very near future.

Are you under 100,000 miles.
If so, Cummins warranty might help you out.

It's a '99, you have two 1/8 npt plugs on top of the filter, pull one out and turn on the ign. If it is working well you will shower the engine with fuel. If nothing comes out you have lift pump problems.

Codes?

Get your codes read at Napa, Autozone or the Dodge dealer near you. If your lift pump failed and/or your VP44 is going, there will likely be codes set. If you see P0216, your VP44 is gone or going to die shortly.
