Suck out the old fluid and replace it with synthetic. I did mine and it helps a ton.
Welcome to the DTR ;D

Mine does the same thing. :-[ I sucked it out twice and refilled it with Lucas Stop Leak, as suggested by someone here on DTR. It quit while the weather was warm, but on cold morning it still growls for awhile. I didn't notice if Lucas was synthetic or not.

If you find one that works, be sure to post it.

On a serious note. I've had good luck with using Amsoil ATF in the power steering system to reduce the cold weather noise. Royal Purple also makes a synthetic power steering fluid but I have not personally tried it.

Re:power steering noise when cold

Be careful with the Amsoil ATF, Amsoil themselves doesn't recommend it except on later model rigs that call for ATF. ATF can melt rubber parts of the steering system. I used to change over to Valvoline Syn-Power to eliminate cold weather squeal but have recently tried Lube-Guard PS treatment, 4oz and $5 later it works excellent.

Where did you find the Lube-Guard?

CR, I picked up the Lube-Guard at Napa but have seen it at most auto parts.
Their auto trans additive is good stuff also, recommended by many of the diesel auto transmission gurus.

Thanks Infidel,

I'll pick some up and see if I can stop the cold morning "growl".

My power steering "growl" is still really bad on 25*/30* mornings.

Does it hurt to mix the Lucas that in there with Valvoline Synthetic Blend?

The Lucas oil gets very thick when cold, I would suggest you remove it ASAP.

We put some in a 7.3 power stroke and the next day it was a bit cold out there was no way that thing was going to start. Ended up draining the oil out which took a good 15 minutes for it to flow from the pan, dumped some 10w30 diesel oil in there and she fired right up.

The Lucas additives are all very think so anyone who is in a cold climate beware.
