Possible totaled engine

OK, I screwed up, no egt guage, programer, mountains and a large load. I now have a hole in my number one cylinder.

Dealer in Oklahoma wants 13k to put in a new short block and 18k for a whole new engine.

My question is two fold. Can I just replace the piston and rings, and if the cylinder is bad just have it resleeved? How much SHOULD this cost?

Also I have easy access to the Iowa and Oklahoma City areas, can anyone recommend someone to do work on my engine?

Lastly, where can I get a good price on a new shortblock. By the way I have a 2005, 3500 with the 5.9 cummins.

thanks for your help.

Welcome to DTR

Ouch! Dude! Hang in there! Someone smarter than me will be along shortly. I would think a piston and a cylinder honing would be just fine for about $3K.

Holy smokes! I’ll sell you my engine and put in for 18K! That dealer must have something he needs to pay off. Sorry I can’t help but I don’t see what you couldn’t just rebuild that engine for a few thousand.

For example look at this:

18k for a whole new engine? You could get a whole new truck for that! I'd say forget the dealer! Check ebay. You could easily get a whole new engine for 1/3 that price.

by the way Welcome to DTR.

Jlm2084,

WELCOME TO DTR!

18K???

Where are you at? Maybe a member near you could advise you who could do the work for a reasonable amount.

P.S. Use the user Cp and fill in your signature so we know what you are working with.

Yes this suck

I know 18K for a new engine is crazy, so who can someone recommend in the Des Moines IA or Oklahoma City region who can tear down my current engine, bore it out to .030 over and put all new pistons and rings in it.

Thanks,

I'd suggest that you bore the affected cylinder and sleeve it to stock size instead of going oversize. The stock piston will pay a good part of the sleeve and you won't have balancing problems.
I can't help you in your area, but you can attach some stamps on the engine and mail it over
You should also check the oil nozzles on the crankshaft if it wasn't #1 that got plugged, broke, fell out or the like.

Good Luck!

I burned #6 enough that it was knocking pretty bad,and it was repairable.
cost me $3700 to have it done, they put a new piston and rings in and honed the cylinder, they had to pull the engine to do it,If i had it to do over again I'd have pulled the engine myself (35 hours I was billed...could have took it apart in the frame and put it back that way in that time)...you used to be able to get em' sleeved,if still possible I think that's a good way to repair em'.
thats my .02 on that!

Don't they make a piston repair kit for these motors?
If so, take it to a Cummins shop or any other truck shop that works Cummins engines. Have them check it out and repair only whats damaged.
