Pitman Shaft Seal Problems

I pulled the pitman arm off today to change the seal. The seal in there has no snap ring or washer like the seal kit has. I phoned the dealer and the double seal kit with the washer and snap ring is all they list for replacement. Has anybody seen this before? Do I have an oddball steering box in there? The box mounts with three bolts, two on the bottom and one in line with the adjusting screw on top. The only #'s I can find are 8 4 on the underside of the box.

Thanks

Have you ever tore in to a steering gear box before? I belive you have to go at it from the top to the bottom by taking out the sector shaft. Looking down on your box there should be a cover you unbolt that and take it out and then the seals are in there maybe the seals are on backwards or they go top to bottom instead of bottom to top

The previous post is correct. The cover plate on top is pulled, then the shaft assembly lifted out after the pitman arm is removed. Once the shaft assembly is removed, you will see the snap ring and seal setting on the lip at the bottom of the steering gearbox.

Word of caution, be sure to index the pitman shaft to the steering column shaft. They have to be installed exactly in the same position relative to each other as when they were disassembled. The pitman shaft will turn a bit as it is lifted out, so use paint marks on the steering colum shaft and case, and on the pitman shaft and case.

If you are in the least bit clueless on what to do, take it to a professional as that is a whole lot cheaper than getting it into a hydro lock situation and driving over a cliff!

What's a cliff? I live in the flatlands.

Both my CD shop manual and the instruction sheet in the seal kit show everything coming out the bottom.
