I have a 2001 3/4 ton Diesel, The plug does not look standard to me. A socket would not work because there is nothing to place the socket on. Some type of allen wrench. The plug is flat with a square like hole in the middle.

You don't need a socket just the square end of the ratchet or extension.

The hole in the plug is a 3/8" square drive.

Just use your 3/8" ratchet in the hole.

And do not over tighten when going back, as some have striped thiers. I believe the torque has been readjusted to 40 ftlbs?? Someone correct me if I am wrong, as I still drive a old 2nd gen. Goodluck,,,, Rick. Oh yea, welcome to the greatest web site for your Dodge diesel!!!

Yeah you gotta watch that torque spec.
Some older books say it's 60 ft/lbs.
After many stripped pans they changed it.
I don't personally use a torque wrench on mine.
I just make it GNT.
Good-N-Tight

Save the 800 pound gorilla routine for the lug nuts.

Thanks everyone. I did not know there was a site like this out here. I will be visiting more often since I am new to my diesel engine.

P.S.----If you decide to torque it down with a torque wrench and you do use an extension, make sure you look at the chart in the instruction booklet that came w/ the wrench (if you still have the bookelt) b/c when using extensions, they throw off the exact amount of torque applied. I'm just picky like that and I HAVE to be exact. Just a tip and my $.02.

Get rid of the drain plug and put in a Fumotovalve and it won't be a problem again....

Joe, here are some really good tips for changing your oil for the first time:

I hope this helps.....
