OK, now for the clue. ??? Yes you guested it, my mechanic left it in the air intake hose. A you can see by the very bad picture I have chipped of the ends of 3 turbo fins. Now the question is ??? where are the pieces and do you think they could have caused engine damage? Do you think they could still be trapped in the inner cooler? How much will it cost to have the turbo rebuilt? What should I do?

I am looking for suggestions, thanks,

Re:O my "L"
Any damage that that the missing pieces will cause has been caused and probably nothing else will happen to them. However, I would expect that the turbo bearing life will be drastically shortened unless the missing pieces are diametrically opposite one another, in which case the unbalance will not be as bad.
Can't you go back to the mechanic or shop and complain? What about warranty?
Re:O my "L"
I would take all the intercooler lines and see if you can find the peices .........if you're lucky they havn't made it to the engine yet

as for the turbo .........get it replaced before it grenades and sends lots of little pieces into your engine ............

big time at the shop you got the work done at........they should cover the turbo replacement .........and get them to replace the intercooler too cause the pieces may be lodeged in there just waiting to come loose at a later date

Re:O my "L"
I just ahd mine rebuilt locally for about $350. Not the same turbo as yours but, while in the shop, I have heard him give the same quote to other clients on the phone. I'm sure they weren't all 1st gen Cummins. They can improve the flow with alittle extra cash as well. I'd love to have one from Piers or somebody, but a rebuild was half the price, and it'll be a while before the engine will be able to make use of an upgraded turbo.

The best advice that I can give you is to call Piers. www.piersdiesel.com He will give you a straight answer about your concerns.
Tom

I would not drive that truck until the turbine blade is replaced and balanced. I bought the rebuild kit for my 91.5 and the instructions are very specific about absolutely no damage to the blades. You can rebuild a turbine with good blades without re-balancing only as long as four seperate parts are properly marked, maintaining exact balance when put back together. I would assume that your bearing will be wiped (metal to metal) due to the imbalance. The kit was $100 cdn but assumes all blades are perfect condition. The instructions are so specific that you can only use a bristle brush and NOT a metal brush when cleaning soot off the turbine side. Here is the link for getting the re-build manual, looking up "parts and service" then "service literature". Be patient as this site uses flash software and takes time to present things in its own slow way. The download is pdf file and is speedy. Note that the compressor blade has LEFT hand thread nut!
