NV5600 swap
NV5600 swap
My 96 Dodge 3500 Diesel 4x4 5spd is losing 3rd gear and the syncros... before I commit to buying another NV4500 I wanted to know this...

Will the NV5600 go into a 96 Dodge truck that had a 4500, without having to change driveshaft lengths or mounts etc? I know I will have to get a new flywheel and clutch. Help!
Re:NV5600 swap
The driveshaft will need to be shortened, as the NV5600 is quite a bit longer than the NV4500. There is a complete transmission and installation kit available for this, and I had a friend buy one and bring it to my shop to install. It is pretty easy, and the driveshaft is not that expensive to have shortened at a speciality shop. I will look up the kit supplier and get it posted so you can check with them.

My experience is that you are better off to rebuild the NV4500 and add an overdrive. I suspect it will be about a thousand dollars less expensive than the transmission swap, and you get 10 forward gears instead of 6.
Re:NV5600 swap
Okay. Thanks. I was going to buy a used 5600 for about $800 from a salavage yard nearby and try to make it work.. but rebuilding the 4500 is prolly the best idea....how much foe the overdrive? Does it go on after the transfercase?
Re:NV5600 swap
nv5600 might be cheaper in the long run, saturn overdrives are up around 800, they go on after the tcase and also require a new driveshaft, compare the two and see whats cheaper

if ur goin to go with the saturn, give advanceadapters a call
