NV 231 in our trucks... Possible?

Well, my T-case is cracked in my truck and the body shop gave me the ID tag and he swears it says 231 D. I can't belive it. Has anybody EVER heard of these being used in our trucks? I know it should be the 241 D but the shop says that's what it says. I called Tranfer Case Express and they say it is not possible for the 231 to be in there. Does anybody know the spline count coming off the tranny into the T case? How about the rear?

Thanks in advance...

It is not possible for it to be a NP 231 - it certainly is not a factory case for a CTD Dodge. The NP 241 is a fair bit larger than a NP 231 and the slip yoke rear output shaft from a NP 231 would not accept the much larger rear shaft of a CTD Ram.
Usually, you see NP 231's in the Jeep line of 4X4's - much smaller and lighter vehicles.

See THIS page from dodgeram.org. The 231 was used with the 6 and 8 cylinder gas engines, but supposedly not with the CTD. Maybe someone did some swapping before you bought it?

TUGUM, you would be a life saver if you can get this before tomorrow about 10:30. The last digits are 8RS527953 . I have an appointment tomorrow so we'll see how it goes.

Thanks!

On a side note, the 241 HD is only a hundred bucks more than the LD version (both rebuilt). Will the HD bolt right in? Also, how could I prove that this is not a 231 (for insurance)?

If you look at the link I put in my last post, there are some dimensional differences. They are fairly slight, but some measuring will prove it one way or the other.

Yep, Andy, I've been studying that page all day. I just got off the phone a bit ago with Transfer Case Express and he said that the casting number will tell the truth. He says it's impossible to be a 231 so he said to give him a call tomorrow when the insurance company and I go through it. Thanks for the headsup, though!

Took the truck over to insurance today, they are giving me a new rear part of the housing. The thing that really gets me is that somebody along the line replaced the T case with a 231 Tugum, thanks for running the VIN through. The truck came with a 241 and now has a 231 I can't figure out why, though. Like CTD nut says, the dimensions are off, but yet that is what is in there! I'm trying to figure out if they replaced the yokes with it or what...

There is a big difference in strength between the 231/241 (They use the 231 in jeeps). You might check into just replacing it with a used 241. It might not cost as much as the repair on the 231.

Stormin_Norman, that's what confuses me! The case held up to two sled pulls and quite a bit of snowplowing this year. I am definitely going to keep my eye out for a 241, but on the junkyard search the closest one was in Colorado! Going to be scanning ebay. If this one grenades on me I will probably go with one from Transfer Case Express, they have rebuilt ones for $750. The HD is only $850. Have to see how finances play out. The housing piece for my truck is only $70, so it isn't bad at all.

Maybe geared in the HD and chain on the other. Or there is an access for a PTO.

the hd version has a wider chain for more torque capability and can have a pto hooked up on it

I think the case may be steel instead of aluminum, but I'm not real sure on that one

I thought all 3500 came with the hd and on the 2500's it was optional

This is only the second t-case I've heard of coming apart.

My uncle lost the one in his 2000 Dually at about 170000mi. On his way to OK, had to hold it in 2wd from Kansas City all the way to OKC.

I laughed at him for two weeks. He didn't think it was funny, at the time.
