I would manually fill the fuel filter up, then you may have to crack the line open at each injector to bleed all of the air off. Just loosen the nut on each injector (that goes to the line) and crank it over until you see fuel coming out of one. Then close the ones that have fuel coming out. Do this until you get all 6 to bleed. I *think* the magic number is 20, but I wouldn't crank for more than 10 seconds at a time to keep the starter cool.

There's a 10mm bolt on top of the fuel filter housing. Undo it about 1 turn and push on the lift pump plunger until you get fuel coming out of the bolt. Tighten it up and it should start. I usually use a hammer handle to push on the plunger. I do this when I change fuel filters as well.

Or, do all the things suggested above, then remove the air filter, disconnect the grid heater, and have someone crank it over while you spray WD40 into the air intake tube.

I'd only go to this step if it didn't want to start after taking the normal steps to get the air out of the system and I wanted to save ware and tear on the starter.

The obvious first, do you have enoungh fuel in the tank?
I would have ten gallons minimum.

ABSOLUTELY NOT.....this was done with diesels in the past......but ATF is NOT good for any of the newer diesels....the friction modifiers in the ATF is really hard on the injection pumps. The injection pumps of today have MUCH tigher tolerances than pumps of the past. This is precisely why a "diesel mechanic" at Dodge dealer will never change my fuel filter. Prime it with fresh diesel.

I would bet my last doughnut that you have air in the fuel lines and will have to get most of it out before your truck will start.

He is talking about a 96.

Probably wouldn't hurt his injection pump.
Maybe, possibly.

I wouldn't think of ever putting ATF or anything like it in my truck or in a 3rd gen.

Phox,

I believe the P7100 has tighter tolerances than the VP-44. Considering the price of a new/rebuilt P7100 - I wouldnt chance it. Ever priced one out? They are close to $2500-3k

Ok, retraction time.

I, unlike some higher-ups at CBS , aren't afraid to admit my mistakes at the soonest available opportunity.

Never put ATF into a modern Diesel Engine.

ATF bad mojo, chock full of abrasives and detergents,
the exact opposite of lubrication which injection pumps thrive on.

ATF is worse. Air is getting in the system somewhere. Have you opened the bleed screw on top of the filter housing while pumping the hand primer to verify there are absolutly no air bubbles?
