no start after sitting a year

a friend of mine has a 97 dodge that has been sitting about a year and they just put another motor in it that has been sitting about the same time. they got it put in and everything put back together and it seemed to be locked down at first, but then started turning over. there is fuel to the injector pump, but not to the injectors. also it seems like when it is spinning it is spinning slower than most 12v's usually do, almost like something is in a bind. thanks ahead any help is greatly appreciated

Bad batteries? Rod bearings torqued to much? Put oil in cylinders to help "break it in"?

Could be oxidation on started contacts too.

How old is the diesel? Is it the same fuel that has been in the fuel tank the whole year? Old diesel will turn bad fast; i.e. bacteria growth and gelling issues. Maybe the bad fuel not allowing it to start; and then you've cranked too long on the starter, causing it slow down?

Old diesel would defintly be a concearn. Not only in the tank but the filter and lines too.

yea didnt think about the diesel. i might add the motor he put in it is also used if that means anything. they said it ran when they pulled it out of the other truck. we will definitely look at all the things mentioned

Make sure of the basics as well, is the P7100 fuel shutoff lever all the way up?

Can you turn it over by hand with the alternator nut or the barring tool? Is it possible that something in the transmission/clutch assembly is binding? If it spins normally by hand, it might be worth having the starter load tested. If it is bad, try new brushes and contacts rather than exchanging it. MUCH cheaper.

Fresh fuel from a can plumbed to the lift pump can eliminate the old fuel question but even with old fuel, it should spin at normal starting speeds.

If the inj. pump sat that long probably corroded on the inside and may not be any good.
