new guy with black smoke

This is my first post on this board. On my way home with my new trailer today I noticed a good deal of black smoke when I went down past half throttle.it never did it before and I had just filled it up before I left home. Could this be related to bad fuel in any way ?
can somebody help me here thanks fred

Welcome!

You need to fill in your sig and user cp. It's hard for someone to help when they don't know what your driving or what mods you might have.

Since I just started to hear a sucking/hissing sound I looked for an intercooler leak but had no luck .I checked all the connections and nothing was loose from what I could see

Did you look and listen again to see where the sucking/hissing is coming from?

you can only hear it when it gets a load on it . It's quit at part throttle also.when checking it while parked there is no audible sound . I am going out to double check for any loose or leaky connections. Is it unusual for an intercooler to spring a leak ?

I don't think it's a common problem, but you do hear of it sometimes.

Check you lower intercooler boots , they have a tendancy of rubbing on the inner fender, which puts nice little slices in them.

I check it for slices which is something that I didn't today. My concern earlier was that the hoses didn't come off. My brain is on vacation today because my new race car trailer just got here .that has me somewhat pumped up.

So what was the culprit ?

Mine was the small hose that goes into the turbo the other day......it popped loose and sounded like a wind tunnel in side the cab. Is that called a intercooler hose or turbo hose by the way?

hemifred,
Any luck on the noise?
How long have you had the truck? Do you know if it has a fueling box? That could cause smoke under load. Has the silencer ring been removed?

yup, thats the intercooler hose. on the way out to IRP, it came off once on a highly bombed 24V, and on the way back twice....one time we were racing a chevy gasser btw, he had new hoses on order and got them the weekend after IRP....

also, do you have guages? you could tell right now if you had guages...super low boost (if any) and higher EGT's

First I checked all the clamps to make sure they were inn the right position and tight.
there was nothing wrong that I could see. So I dismantled the entire section from the turbo to the intercooler. I thought maybe under presssure the hose was expanding and
leaking from somewhere that you wouldn't otherwise see. After checking the hoses on the inside and seeing nothing wrong I put it back together again.
The problem dissappeared !! Nothing looked wrong when I first checked it (twice ). But stranger things have happened in my life than this so I won't beat myself up wondering why.It helps to maintain your sanity.
I checked the boost afterward and it was making 30 lb. It has an EZ edge box. The EGT and fuel pressure gauges are next then an air box. The 4" exhaust is on my shop floor waiting patiently to be installed.

What is normal the water temperature range while towing ? Mine goes from 190 to as high as 225 on steep grades. I know this is relative to EGT but I am curious what is considered average

Thanks guys for the info

Mine seldom goes over about 190*. If you do much driving off road or dusty conditions, you may need to flush your radiator from the back side. See my gallery for the handy-dandy back-flush tool I fabricatd. You will be surprised how much junk will come out the front.

Temps are 190 when not towing.I am assuming that it's related to increased EGT temps. The truck only gets used to tow my race car and that's only about 5,000 miles a year.Total mileage is only 38,000. It's never seen dust here in NJ . We leave that to you guys out west.

You might want to see my cars if so check my site. It's very interesting even to truck guys.
