New fuel filter, wont start?

Exactly how it sounds, I replaced my fuel filter. With one from the Cummins dealer. Did it per the instructions with the filter. I go to prime it, bump the key to start, and let it back to on, so the lift pump would run and prime it, with the bolt on the VP-44 loose. I think I did that 2-3 times and got fuel, so I tightened the bolt, and started the truck. It ran for a few secconds and died.

I tried priming it again, never got any fuel, spent the next hour trying to prime it. Never could get any fuel anywhere, even pre-filter on top of the canister.

Is there anything else it might be before I buy a new lift pump?

FWIW- I decided to replace the fuel filter because I felt a slight loss of power, I assumed not enough fuel, decided to try a new filter.
I have ony had this truck 2 months, and now I really want my gauges!!

if its not receiving any fuel when you open the water drain valve then its time for a lift pump, if you have less then a 100k it should be under warranty

I assume you mean open the drain valve and bump start to cycle the pump?

I am not getting fuel to the inlet on the filter canister. I can hear the lift pump, but am not seeing any fuel. I will check the valve.

And I have 103k. Bought it with 101*** miles on it.

I drained the last of the fuel from the bowl. Primed it 4-5 times. Tried to drain more, not a drop.

Time for a new lift pump, right?

New pump. Do yourself a favor and get a FASS II. Yes, it is a little over twice what a stock LP costs, but you will have fewer problems with it, likely none. Going back with the same stocker, you'll eventually have the same problem again, and by that time you may have cooked your VP44.

crack two injector lines on the head. crank until foam or fuel ( it should POP and sound weak when it turns over) Once you have fuel there (at the two injectors) tighten them back up and crank the engine again and should fire right up. I did the same thing about two months ago. Freaked me out too. Just dont crank it for extended periods of time. More than 30 seconds. (my uncle has worked for Crenwelge dodge, gmc. chevy in Texas for almost 25 years and he is the guy I called when it happened to me. He is awsome.)

If you're not getting fuel to the filter, cracking the injector lines won't do any good.

Even though you can hear the lift pump, it doesnt' mean it's pumping anything, just the motor spinning in there.

If the FASS or FASS II is out of your price range, get the OEM lift pump from Cummins instead of Dodge,
at least half the price for the exact same thing.

Yup, and its time for a fuel pressure guage also. It will tell you when the LP is going out.

Also, when the LP is weak you can add fuel through the top of the filter canister to get it running again, but you are running on the injection pump and that can cause a IP failure if the fuel pressure is too low.

Get a FP guage while you are waiting for the LP.

I just went into business for myself, and it has been really slow. Things are finally starting to get rolling, and gauges will go on as soon as a little money comes in. They were high on my list before this. Now they are pretty much on the top of everything after rent and the rest of the bills...

Not really an expert, but I would think (assume) that the Cummins one, made by Carter, would be different than the ones found in everyday parts houses.

Proven to be Diesel compatible, and used on hundreds of thousands of Cummins engines,
although not mounted on the engine like the Dodge trucks.

Few bucks more for the Cummins version (unless you buy it from Dodge $$), and a little peace of mind IMHO.

I wound up with a Carter from ORiley.

Before I put it in I talked to Thompson Diesel, our local turbo and injector shop, they have a good bit of experience with the problems on our trucks (or at least said they do) and the guy I talked to there said to go for it.

I also found a few threads here and elsewhere from people very satisfied with the P74213 I got.

And the truck is running great, so I'm thrilled. And will be more so in a month or so when i can get the gauges and see my fuel pressure.

Unhappy More of the same

OK guys, help me out. I have almost no experience with the 24V trucks but I have done some research here and on other 'net sites and do my own work on my '92.

I just got in from helping a neighbor change fuel filter on his truck and we can't get any fuel to run out of the line to the filter or out of the port on the top of the filter when bumping the lift pump. (We didn't try starting it since we didn't get fuel flow.) He has a '99 2500 Sport 5spd and it drove fine on the 100 mile round trip to Tulsa and back today. I'm assuming that the lift pump is out even though I can hear it hum. He's asked me if I will change it for him tomorrow so that he can leave on a 1500 mile trip on Saturday morning.

What do I need to know about changing the lift pump on this truck aside from what's posted here?

http://dodgeram.info/tsb/recalls/Notice878.htm

Also, my understanding is that the '99 doesn't show codes on the dash. Is there any way to tell the condition of the IP BEFORE it leaves on the trip?

I've told him several times before that he needs a FP gauge but he always says that money is too tight. Hopefully he got lucky this time and will get one soon.

I'll be calling Cummins in the morning for a pump. If they don't have one, I'll try the O'Reilly's pump that DisplacedTexan used. Any idea on what kind of price I should expect to have to pay?

Thanks in advance.

Jay,
Not much else to the LP replacement. I have heard you can get the LP for about 150.00 at the Cummins dealer. Have the engine serial number when you call.
Let your buddy know that if he thinks money is tight now, just wait until his truck is down and needs an 1800.00 injector pump because he didn't monitor the fuel pressure.
If you have an Autozone nearby, they will check for codes for free. Only other way to tell a bad injector pump is if the engine runs badly.
