Sometimes that can be from a dirty MAP sensor and a dirty IAT sensor. I had that problem for a while and cleaned those sensors and the problem went away.

there arnt any other codes? if not you need to get to a place where they can read codes with a reader.. auto zone does it for free. dealers may charge! this way you can figure out what the culprit really is

Blue smoke will be oil in the combustion chamber. I'm betting it'll be a turbo issue.

help

What is the temp range were you are and oil weight are you using? Is your manifold heater coming on for the temp? Hence oil consumption? Or is it just unburned fuel ? Does it go away when the engine is warm.

Lets check a couple simple things. Hows the air filter? OK? Pull the large black tube going to the turbo and look into the turbo. Does the impeller spin? Is there a lot of oil in it? Does it wobble enough to touch the sides?
Have you ever had the valves adjusted?
How many miles. Do you use additive? Do you run it hard every now and then?
The 1693 is just a companion code that tells you you have codes. You'll need a scanner to get the rest. Do you have gauges? Fuel pressure is very important on the 24 valve motors.
Any cold diesel will smoke a little, especially if the outside air is very cold.

i will bow my head. and smoke a cigar in its memory! been there.
check the fuel pressure! and check to see if its is in fact getting fuel thru the pump and filter. it still might survive. but the i.p. is most likely toast.
