Is my VP44 failing?

I have been having some engine miss under heavy load and more smoke than usual under light load. The engine seems to sound like there is a bit more knock but it's hard to tell for sure. No VP related code. Lift pump and filter are good. How does an engine act if the VP44 is failing? Could there be a failing or clogged injector?

The only symptom I ever had with my failure (prior to pulling the codes and seeing P0216), was the "Dead Pedal". I would be crusing down the highway, minding my own business, try to accelerate after a traffic slow down or curve, nothing. I could depress the pedal as much as I wanted, with no response. Truck "ran" fine, it would stay at a nice consistant RPM, just refused to accelerate from time to time.

Whats your fuel pressure been doing?

I don't have a guage in the cab to see what's going on at WOT, but at idle I'm at about 14. That seems to coincide with what others have reported with good lift pumps. This lift pump is only a few months old.

Sounds MUCH more like a bad injector, than the injection pump.

VP44 death's usually have "dead pedel", or "Hard start when hot" conditions.

Try a set of Don's Mach 2 injectors, they are just about the same price as some new OE injectors....

If you think you have a VP44 that is going DON'T CHANGE THE FUEL FILTER!! I changed mine and the truck wouldn't start again at all. I had Diesel Injection Service in Louisville KY look at it and it required a rebuild. The head guy said it is because an internal diaphram was cracked and the loss of pressure on one side caused total failure. Just thought you should know.

so whats he supposed to do - never change the fuel filter again?

Usually you wont be albe to get it restarted if the lift pump isnt working.
