My Mechanic is stumped.

I have a 2001, 6 speed. Just replaced the VP44. Runs fine, no drivability issues. However the check engine light keeps coming on and it throw a 1693 code, sometimes 0500.
Must be related, the GV overdrive won't engage when the light is on. The mechanic replaced the rear differential sensor but no help.

Anybody got any ideas?

P0500 is usually the sensor in the back of the tranny. A 1" hex with a two wire connector, usually a whitish colored plastic. It is actually the output speed sensor. P1693 is just a companion code, meaning that there is a code in another module. Typically the PCM.

Well my mechanic gave up on it so I picked it up. Its a 6 speed so I don't know what the transmission speed sensor does. Does anyone know where the GV overdrive gets it signal?

The 0500 code seams to be resolved with the differential speed sensor swap.

The 1693 is from the PCM. Can any codes from the PCM turn on the check engine light?

Thanks

The speed sensor on your truck ( the one in the back of the trans ) controls the speedo above 15mph, and also for the cruise. It is kindof redundant with having the sensor in the rear end too, but the sensor in the diff, was really for the ABS. The P1693 code is just saying that there is a code set in the PCM. The ECM controls the check engine lamp so they communicate to determine if the light should be on or not. If the diff sensor took care of the P0500 code, you should be able to reset the codes and be good to go. If the light is still on, you'll have to select the PCM when reading codes. The code reader will ask which module to select. Engine ECM, or engine PCM. Basically on your truck the PCM controls charging, guage info, transmission operations, ect.

Thanks vzdude,

Went back to the dealer to pick up a trans speed sensor, guess what, they claim the 6 speed doesn't have one, I know it does, I removed it to look at it. The dealers graphic only shows the transmission from the drivers side so you can't see it since its on the passenger side.

Do you possibly know the part # so I can be done with these wingnuts?

Oh my gosh, just went to pick up the part # you gave me, they say that's only for automatic transmission and once again say there is none in a 6 speed trans.

That part # (04800879) looked much different from mine, its mostly plastic, mine is metal with a little metal ball at the end.

I'll try another dealer tomorrow.

JYD is right....that's the backup lamp switch.

Man.....I spaced the whole 6 spd thing! My BAD! You're right....the rear end sensor should have taken care of the P0500. Now....need to get the PCM scanned to find out the cause for the P1693.
