Low alternator charging issue
Low alternator charging issue
Looking for tips to check in my electrical issue.
96 Dodge 2500 turbo diesel. I suddenly had a low voltage reading on gauge & a gen light. About 8-9 charging volts showing. Battery cables are tight & clean. Batteries are good. Serpentine belt is tight. Fuse tests good. No loose wires found. First time this happened about 10 years ago I picked up a new alternator & installed. Issue gone & all was good. Last week I got same low voltage scenario start again. I figured alternator was worn out again so I picked up another new one & put it in. Problem still there. Same low charging voltage when truck running. No loose wires & connections are clean & tight.
Only thing I see differently now is a discoloration underneath the red clear insulation about 2 in on positive battery cable that runs from passenger side battery to driver side battery. Corrosion?
Would this cause my charging issue low voltage? Any other tips would be very much appreciated. I need the truck! Thanks for any input Mike

Alternator or what?
I had the same problem this week. Batteries dead. I replaced both batteries and she fired right up as she should. I checked the battery voltage and got a 11.98 Volt and a 12.15 Volt from the new batteries with motor not running. Then I started the motor and re checker the voltage which read 13.10 and 13.07. So my question is, Is my Alternator produceing enough voltage to keep my batteries fully charged? All my battery cables were replaced two years ago and are clean, all grounds are connected and secure. My mechanic friend told me that my Alternator should be producing 14+ volts. Just asking for opinions and what Alternators work best on A 99 Dodge 2500 w/ Cummins 24
valve. Thank you.
