Lost 5th Gear HELP!!!

Howdy all, I was shifting from 4th to 5th gear when I lost 5th gear and I need to know if anybody knows of a good shop in the St. Paul, MN area.
I have done a search on the repairs for this problem and was wondering how many people out there have done the lock nut repair and how long it has lasted. Can the lock nut repair be done without removing the tranny and is this something I could do.

any help is greatly appreciatedly.

Thanks

5th gear - lost mine a while back too

Fordnomore, last year my 5th gear went out on a trip to Florida. A nephew of mine lives in Chattanooga and recommended a shop there to get it fixed. With mine being a 4x4 they had to remove the transfercase in order to get to the overdrive case on the back of the tranny case - the OD gears are outside the case and separate from the rest of the gears. The tranny stayed in place though. They used a new high strength Locktite that comes in what looks like a Chapstick tube to hold the 5th gear nut in place. The nut came off again on the way back from FL to GA and I had to take it in again . They said they hadn't seen their repair fail before, let alone as soon as mine did and they did the repair again, same method. So far it hasn't come loose but I think it's only a matter of time before it does. If and when that happens I'll be contacting QUAD 4x4 ( http://www.quad4x4.com/ ) to get their replacement shaft and gear set that is supposedly the REAL fix for this problem. They have some very detailed info on their website that explains why the OEM setup fails and why other aftermarket offerings are only band-aids that will likely fail sometime as well. I hope this info helps.

Steve

The nut with the set screws seems to stay on allot longer. The socket to put the nut on cost more than the nut.

You can get that from Piers, along with a new 5th gear, if it was damaged at all.
Yeah, the tool to uninstall/install the nut runs around $125. I know, I have one I needed for a repair on a guys truck.

Last Spring I spun 5th gear off. Didn't have the money for some fancy fix. Pull the beast in the barn, dropped the transfer case and rear adapter, put the gear back on, tightened the nut with a punch and hammer. I then broke out the old sputter box and put a small tack between the nut and shaft. No problems in 12K+ miles since.

Unorthadox yes, but seems to work.

Fordnomore, I am less than an hour from you, I have a heated shop with all the tools we could need and I actually work at Kennedy transmission in forest lake, If you want to pick a day, we can do it in the shop here in Rush City, Either with the set screw method or a tack weld, I believe the weld would actually work quite well, and its free!

Go ahead and pick a day, this weekend and next weekend are pretty full, but I am self employed and its not a big deal to do it during the week for me, go ahead and give me a call and we will get something set up, I wont be available for about an hour, but after that or tomorrow is fine.

When I had my 96 I had the tack weld repair done on 5th gear nut. It lasted about 20K and came off again. I had the transmissin rebuilt with aftermarket shaft. Later sold it to a neighbor and it is still going strong.

I dont forsee a GOOD tack weld with good penetration letting looose, not unless the shaft goes with it! If you get penetration on the weld on both sides, its not going anywhere.
