Limp mode 2008

08 6.7 auto 100k miles all stock - Started it in really cold weather, about, 15 degrees, started right up, but didn't sound right give it a little throttle very little response, thought might be gelled fuel so I let it idle a little bit pressed accelerator got up to 1400 rpms, put in low range and drove around property with very little speed, to raise engine temps , still very little power, stopped truck, floored it, throttle rpms went up some but black smoke was coming out of exhaust and engine light came on shut truck down decided to wait for the weather to improve- Few days later temps went into 40s, went out took air cleaner out, stated truck, started right up, and had normal throttle response, drove 25 miles, at 60 MPH to get a new air filter, installed, no problems, engine light still on drove 30 miles home at 60 mph. Stopped truck to visit, hour later got back in truck to drive home, no problems, stopped at mail box, got out of truck, it idled for about 2 minutes got back in and on display appeared "Exhaust system filter 100% full start regeneration" drove short distance to house with message the same. Turned off truck.- Next unhooked batteries for 24 hours, reconnected them, started truck, started with no problem, overheard showed same message 100% full start regen then it added in limp mode- pressed accelerator increased maybe 200 rpms and that was its max, shut truck down and started my homework.
Haven't kept up with all the 6.7 news and I'm talking years. I researched 6.7 before and after I purchased but most of the talk was about deletes and horsepower . Was under warranty for 5 years Thought my truck stock had plenty power so why do deletes. Well know I got problems and it seems things have really changed and I am quite confused thusly, why I'm here to be educated.
I've talked to 2 independent dodge techs and both recommend deletes, but it seems you no longer remove exhaust system, add a new one, buy a tuner and install it in your cab, enter the parameters, and presto truck runs with everything deleted, if you wanted more power, press some more buttons and more power, The techs are telling me that the EPA has really squished the delete market and makers of the previous tuners have stopped making those type tuners or gone out of business like "Bully". They recommend giving them $1500, they will put on exhaust system with deletes and they recalibrate your ECM. This is a one shot recalibration if you want more HP later on you go back to them and they have to enter that new information. NOT like the old days, push a few buttons to change parameters on your cab mounted unit. Is this all true? Do I have any alternatives, Any help would welcome I'm 72 years old with heart ,kidney and lung problems I really don't need this crap in my life. TYA

Did you let it do the regen cycle? it takes about 20 minutes IIRC and that should fix it.

My 2009 4500 is also giving me limp mode headaches. I changed the trans solenoids, as recommended by my mechanic, then he cleaned the connectors, but no help. I think it's a fuel pressure problem, so I replaced the fuel filter, the lift pump, the fuel pressure regulator, the fuel pressure relief valve on the front of the rail and finally the fuel rail pressure sensor...which seemed to fix the problem for a few weeks. But now it worse than ever about going into limp mode. I'm going to put in another pressure sensor today. I doubt if that will help, though. I wonder if my injector pump is getting weak. Any ideas? Thanks
