How to find out if odometer is correct...

Im going in the morning to look at an 02 quad cab short bed 4x4, black, 5 speed...a friend of mine told me about it , he drove it and looked at it, said it was super clean. and 74,000 original miles. so im pretty excited...but was just wondering if theres a way to check to see if thats correct, becuase i would think if it were true, they would be asking alot more than they are...so if anyone can tell me a way to check, it would be greatly appreciated. im taking some money with me to put down if its as clean and drives as nice as my buddy says, just wanting to double check that milage if possible...thanks

'Bout all you can do easily is run a CarFax with the VIN, should show all registrations/associated mileages at the time. Sometimes even CarFax isn't always up-to-date, especially if it's only had a couple owners so far. Ask for supporting receipts/papers that may show VIN and prove recent mileages too. Beyond that, as well as the Cummins usually runs out, it would be difficult to assess actual miles, eh? Heck, I can't tell a 2,000mi truck from 200,000mi by the way it runs sometimes!! :-) Good luck, let us know...

Have the ECM scanned, then take the total engine hours and multiply by 47.9, that will get you very close to actual miles.

If you go to a dealer the DRB III can read the mileage in the ECM

Now that's something I surely wouldn't have thought of, good idea...I was going under the pretense(fancy way of saying 'assumed', because we know what that means!) he may have wanted to check prior to seeing in person. Then there's a little difficulty getting it to the dealer whilst test-driving, etc...Anyways, thanks for the idea of scanning, I just never would'a thunk of it! ;-)
