It's the plate that bolts to the crankshaft at the rear of the engine, with the gear teeth that the starter engages, and the torque converter bolts to it.
Stock ones have been known to fail, and if it is sounding bad at the back of the engine, I think Infidel may have nailed it.

lol who told u i was doing burnouts...i drive like a granny
Oops, I guess got confused with another thread I was following...
I'm sure you would never dream of doing a burnout
. I know I wouldn't...
Anyhow, good luck with it and let us know what you find.

ok im pretty much convinced its the flex plate or TC bolts...any way i can diagnose this without unbolting the tranny?
what would be the labor charge for something like changing the flex plate if i had it done? i know the cummins flex plate is 90$

but if you go back and read my post, #8, you'll see that I suggested that, before Infidel.
In my book's diagnosis section under "growling, grating or scraping noises" #1 is listed as broken drive plate (flex plate)- replace. It also lists torque converter bolts hitting dust shield- dust shield bent repair or replace.
Below that is planetary gear set broken/seized, overrunning clutch worn/broken- look for debris in oil pan, oil pump components scored/binding, output shaft bearing damaged, clutch operation faulty, bands mis-adjusted.
I haven't owned or had to mess with an auto in quite a while, but I suppose you could pull the TC access cover and see what you can see. I'd bet, though, that you are going to have to pull the transmission to see what's up.
As far as cost, I have no idea. If someone more versed in autos doesn't chime in, I'd call around and get some prices, then decide if it's worth your time to do it yourself...

fair enough...anyone that can beat infidel to the punch deserves respect..
...so i guess i'll need a buddy to turn the engine over slowly, a good flashlight and alot of patience......it cracks towards the center ive been reading
I have a buddy who replaced the flex plate in a 400 small block chev. 4x4 without removing (totally) the transmission. He removed bolts, moved it back far enough to remove and replace. However, he has about every tool sold my major tool suppliers, been wrenching for 20 years, and thinks outside the box! And if I remember correctly he wasn't at it very long.

Mr T contacted me by PM before I even saw this thread.
BTW I just guessed anyway
hoping that its just my TC bolts that are loose and i'll be able to tighetn things up...and from what ive read i can do that without taking off the transmission...unless im wrong?
Did you ever crawl under there for a look around?
hi everyone ! i have good news!...the TC bolts were so loose i could turn them by hand...and no cracks have been found!...i am now leavign it till tommorow before i tighten things up...im debating whether i should tighten them as they are...or loosen ..apply some locktite and re tighten gradually as I turn...
ps let pray that it fixes the "clack clack clack"...im pretty sure i should be able to move any of those bolts with my fingers
thanks everyone!!
