Help, oil leak/blow by

Hey guys,

Dont know if this is the cause, but it started at my last oil change when I added 12qts of oil instead of the usual 11. Plus, I added a can of STP.

Since then, I have had to add a quart of oil about every 1000 miles. It seems to be coming from the front of the engine. I noticed when I sit on an incline and idle my engine for and extended period of time I find a lot of oil blown down on to the ground in the general vicinity of my puke bottle.

Any ideas on what is going on?

Ideas greatly appreciated!!!!!!!

My first question is are you sure your dipstick is correct? There have been wrong ones put in these engines from the factory.
There is a TSB on your oil loss problem through the vent tube.

No additives of any kind are recommended for the crank case of the Cummins.

Thanks for the reply!

I read the bulletin, I am out of warranty. I am not talking about it being on a steep incline, just a little one and the oil blows by while idleing extensively.

Any ideas on how I can fix this without going through the steps outlined in the bulletin? The dipstick used to show normal, now it is showing "add"

Thanks.

You might try relocating the crankcase vent tube...

In my design the oil must go uphill to get out... I've got very little blow by... And no mess on the radiator...

If my dipstick ever goes over the top mark, my blow-by increases exponentially!

Raushbo,

Do you mean if your oil level is above "add" your blow by increases? Mine is staying righnt now at the bottom line of "add" on the dipstick and it is not blowing by anymore. Should I just leave it at the "add" level? If I put another quart in it is just gonna lube the bottom of my engine real good.

Thanks.

Nope, I have the "Add" and "Safe" denotations, I can fuill to the upper line (highest mark) - a drop beyond that, and I get notable blow-by - which plugs the radiator pretty well!
