HELP..... Failing CP3?

Need some troubleshooting advice on my 04.5. Driving down the road today and truck began to lose power and smoke white. It acted like it was missing (like a gas rig with bad plugs). While it was missing, the smoke would puff white and then puff black. If I hammered on the throttle it would billow white and then return back to normal. Truck idles fine and revs fine but when placed under load acts up. No codes, or shall I say no lights on the dash. I am not sure of what is going on, truck has 107,000 miles on it on the original lift pump, and that makes me lean that way but would it even run?? If its not the lift pump what could it be? Injection pump? Injectors?

Help me diagnose because I am picking it up tomorrow from where it layed down on me (Waco) and bringing it back home to start the fixing process.

The way I figure it is that I need to replace lift pump no matter what so I will probably go ahead and order a replacement. With that said any reccomendations?? I was looking at the BD unit, but have heard about Glaciers, and many others. Not looking to add a lot of power in the future just want a nice reliable truck.

Oh and one more thing, this truck only has a K&N and straight piped, no programmers etc.

I need help asap since this is a daily driver and it needs to be back on its feet next week.

Thanks,

Spye

If it were injectors, I doubt that it would clear up at all. Were working on a 7.3 at work right now that we feel has at least 1 bad injector and no matter how far your foot is into or out of the pedal, it still runs like poo. If its an injector, your idle and rev would be bad.

This may be a long shot, but when's the last time you changed your fuel filter. 99% of fuel delivery problems that I see, start with the filter. if its been awhile, just change it and see what happens. My truck billowed a big ole puff of white smoke out one day and it turns out that there was just a tid bit of water in the filter, I drained the filter and primed the system back up and all was well after that. One thing you have to understand about a diesel engine...even the smallest amount of water in the fuel will cause white smoke.

If that is not the culprit, its obvious you have a fuel delivery problem. If you were wanting to change the LP anyways, that would be the first thing to try. A failing CP3 to me would make your truck run horribly all the time, not just under load, so im leaning towards a no on the cp3 failing.

Let us know how it turns out. Good luck

Thanks deerefarm, I will report back. I am hoping to find a DFW dealer for the BD diesel product that may hae the lift pump (upfit) in stock. I will change fuel filter and start there. main thing is to get it home where I can work on it.

I dont know anything about such things but just for clarification, you said-- "No codes, or shall I say no lights on the dash". Did you check for codes?
