quoted from my shop manual "the three wire camshaft position sensor (CMP) is located below the fuel injection pump,it is attached to the back of the timing gear cover housing.
the CMP performs multiple functions. one function is to detect engine speed, Another function is is to relate crankshaft position and top dead center of the no 1cylinder.
because the CMP is now used to relate crankshaft position,
THE CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR (CKP) IS NO LONGER USED." hope this helps, john.......

Crank Position Sensor

My buddy has a 2000 Dodge 3500 and on his engine it has the crank sensor back of starter also there is a sensor under the IP is this the cam sensor or what. Last night the tach quit working so he shut the engine off and it would not restart. Today I took both negative battery cables off for about 1 hour when I hooked them back up the engine started and ran fine. What would have caused the no start problem last night. Thanks in advance Jeep Taylor
