Just to get all my help in one thread,

Dozer previously commented:

You are not going to hurt anything by driving 100 feet. On a whim!!! Try reving the engine to about 2000 RPM for 10-15 secs. I have seen the vanes in pump stick and need a little centrigugal force(reving) to get them back working. The noise you describe is a pump without prime. JMHO

and Black Impala said:

Make sure you are moving before you move the wheel. Try this before you spend 100 bucks for a new pump.

Fixed my friends truck.

I have a lot of things to check, so I'll start in order...keep ya posted

So as I'm reading about the vac pump and the ps pump,
it sounds like I might be in for some big and/or expensive repairs.

Purchased a Gould vacuum pump rebuild kit from Geno's anticipating I was going to be doing this...so if I'm lucky and I haven't broken tines or whatever it'd be cool if this fixed the leak...

Since I haven't lost any steering fluid, brake fluid or engine oil,
does that bode well for my problem? Or could I have major damage to either pump without it showing a loss in some fluid?

I already know I'm going to at least rebuild the vacuum pump with the kit...and kill the kdp same time..

Is there anything else I should plan to do or upgrade while i;m in there?

And if I have to replace either pump, whats a good source? Are there upgrades I should consider?
My questions are pretty general because I don't yet understand everything involved, but I figure I'm going to be learning quite a bit as I get into this...
at least if I take it to a shop I'll understand whats going on
thanks again

OK my plan is:

1) Dozer's Rev engine as above.
2) Replace PS fluid per Infidel
3) those don't work, guess I'll release the brake pressure and put it in the garage.
To be as conservative as possible, "just pretend the pumps arent broken beyond the repair kit I have)

Will moving it without turning on the engine cause less potential damage,
than starting it up and driving it into the garage?

Either way, I'll get a heater for the garage and dig in...I'm sure not going to finish this in a day, if

I want gauges, is there anything in this job that has work related to installing gauges? (thinking boost, pyro so probably not but I oughta ask)
once again, thanks in advance...

Strike that--I just read Infidels comment that I'm pretty sure I need a new PS pump, so I'm just gonna drive it...

? will the damage to the PS pump be obvious?
Beyond the kit I already bought from Geno's...

Clean the screen first, new fluid then see if there is any other damage my bet is there will be none.

My Saga...

Its in the garage, after I backed out the screws on the master cylinder brake lines just a bit, the brakes relaxed (well, at first all the way)
When I tightened the lines again, I had minimal brakes, but good emergency brake. Fortunately the terrain is fairly flat.
And with the pressure on the brakes relieved, the PS noises were gone except for when I had to crank the wheel, and I found as long as I was moving when I had to turn, it really relieved any pressure on the PS
(So the first really scary noises must have been the brakes pads/drums.
And now I remember that after I initally started it, the brakes were stuck until I hit them once or twice...)

After I turned the truck off, I heard a slow whoosh, like air expelling from
the front end...I was in the truck so I'm not sure where it was coming from but I could hear it really well in the driver's seat with the window down.
I don't remember that being a normal sound, but I don't know that I ever paid that much attention...

No matter what I find, finally going to do the leak and the KDP. ...Yeaaa...(fingers crossed.)

I did this but the screen was clean. Good to know though, you wouldn't have thought that nut actually had something valuable inside...

Brakes now hot, PS smoooth

Here's to report back on what happened...not very diagnostic since I just went ahead and rebuilt the vp

OK, the screen, reving etc did not fix the problem.

I rebuilt the vacuum pump--the vanes were all good, so I figure it was just the seal and orings. I also replaced the power steering pump.
New Valvoline Syntech fluid. Also replaced some of the Vac hose with new rubber in several places (but not all, and not inside the cab)

Raised the front end and bled per Pete Gould's instructions.
Pulled out the PS fluid after initial bleeding, still pretty pink, which I think is the old stuff. put in syntech again. Will probably flush once more now that I have driven it so that it is mostly the Syntech.

Power steering is smooth and fine, seems like I got all the air out, at least the PS reservoir is not frothy and I've driven about 30-45 minutes and PS works great.

PROBLELM...Brakes are running very hot, but I'm posting that in the regular place cause its not an emergency...I don't have to drive it right away..
