HELP!!! 2nd Gen Down
HELP!!! 2nd Gen Down
I have a 2002 3500 6speed no mods that just went down. I was driving down the drive way when all of the sudden it sounded like it was running on 3 cyl, had no power, and was putting out a ton of white smoke. It was about 30 degrees out so I don't think the fuel would have been jelling up. I have about 130,000 miles on it now. I scanned it for codes, and it is not throwing any. Every time you start it I have the same result, sounds like it is not running on all cyl, white smoke, and no power. I have it parked because it is not even drivable, and I have a tow truck on the way right now.
Help!!!
Thanks

Sorry to say but it sounds like a bad Vp44. That's why we stress that you should have at least a FP guage so you know when the LP is going south. Because it usally takes the VP44 eventually.
You should be able to do the work yourself, first change the LP and FF (those are the cheap parts) and see if it makes a difference, if not then on to the VP44.

I do have a low fuel pressure light which is triggered when the fuel pressure gets below 5 psi (BD Power product). It has never come on when the engine is running. I hope that is not it. My buddies IP (Injection Pump) just went out last week in a 2002 2500 6spd. He is running an edge att which has a fuel pressure gauge, and he never saw less than 10 psi.
Thanks

White smoke is a sign of the timing being off.
Timing is all electronic inside the VP44.
I'd have to guess the electronics on the VP44 took a dump.
One of the failures not preventable by watching fuel pressure.

If my VP took a dump, it might be time to look at a Chevy. I had a 2004 dodge 2500 6spd that lost its CP3 at 25,000 miles, u-joints at 35,000, wheel hubs at 40,000 miles, and the lift pump was on its way out when I traded it off for my current 02. All of this was replaced under warranty. I don't want to change the subject, because I still want to know what is wrong with my truck but the Chevy's are not looking so bad anymore. My friends 02 dodge has 80,000 miles on it, and his VP just took a dump last week. Yes, he had fuel pressure gauges ect...
He had no signs of issues until the pump decide to go out. Anymore it appears the 1998 and earlier Dodges, Ford 7.3's, and most late model Chevy's are the way to go. I just hate V8 diesel's, so maybe I will try and find a 98' Dodge 5spd.

I work @ a cheby dealership and well............You see what I drive! I would rather have a Vp issue over injectors going bad, filling the crank, glowplugs breaking off and damaging the cylinder, overheating, glowplug harness issues, egr problems etc.....
I would have a 7.3 powerstroke over a duracrap!

That's is good information to hear. I have just never heard anything really bad about the durajap other than the injectors on the earlier models. How is your 06 holding up? I will probably just keep what I got because I really like the sound of the 1st and 2nd gen models. Most people don't want to hear there diesel, but I just love to hear that big rig sound.
Does anyone know if there is a better VP44 on the market. I don't mean for power like the High output VP. I just want one that will work for more than 100K miles even when you are watching fuel pressure. Sounds like you have to put a diaper on these things.
Thanks for the info...

I'd put a hot rod vp on it, add a FASS II, a fuel pressure gauge and call it good. The Vp's usually die from fuel starvation, and some the electronics crap out! On my 02 they did a new vp and lp and within a few weeks the lp started dying again and that's when I added the FASS II and never looked back!
Got my truck back and it was the number 5 jam nut on the rocker arm. I had my values adjusted about one month ago, and I guess they did not tighten the number 5 jam nut up all the way and it came completely off. They put a new jam nut on and torque it to spec. Needless to say I contacted the dealer who adjusted the values, and they are going to reimburse me for the expense and towing costs.
Yes go get yourself a 98 12v, trust me, you will love it, the only problem I have had thus far are with my tranny and that wasn't hard or expensive to fix on my own at all, and I get great economy fuel wise. The chevys really arent the way to go, everyone that I know that has one is at most, ok, with their decision and most are not happy they paid the extra dough for one, same with the 6.0ltr fords
