From: North Carolina or Kentucky. Take your pick
Does the tach work? Some have a sensor on top of vib damper to allow charging. First step is generally pull alt and have it bench tested. On vehicle has been unreliable.

actually the only gauge inside the truck that works is the speedo and the charging meter, but that could be because whoever put it together messed some stuff up, it is a 1990 cummins frame and engine, with a 1996 body on it

That's correct. The sensor is the CRANKSHAFT speed sensor.

Not sure or not if a 90 Cummins engine has it. ???? Probably does.

ok heres a correction to my first post it is a 1990 engine in a 1996 truck, the only gauges inside the truck that work are the speedo and the volt meter, and the wait to start light flshes is there ne one that can tell me how to get that to stop flashing and get the truck to charge

Did you re-install the CPS and make sure it is working?

That is where I would start.
