fuel supply with my truck problems?

I don't have a real way to check fuel pressure.
I do hear the lift pump run for like 2 seconds or so and shut off.
can I assume that means it is still building pressure?

could the new fuel filter clog up after only 100 miles? and less then a third of a tank of fuel.
where do you check the water filter and how do you drain it.

the only fuel error that I am getting is P 0230 but I don't know what to check for that one. will go through the fuses today.
are there more then the box under the hood and the drivers side dash?
since I hear the pump that means it is getting power right?

when I rev it a bit I also get a puff of black smoke, like you should. so that means it is getting fuel right?

do you disconnect both batteries? will that reset every thing that I have turned off like the seat belt chime. or is there a fuse that I could pull to reset the codes. I tried the eng fuse on the drivers side dash.

0230 is a lift pump code. id also make sure you have enough fuel, gauges can be off. Ive run out at 1/4 tank because sender was offf.
There should be a lever on the filter housing, it might be yellow IIRC.
put a pan under filter and catch what comes out.
Im guessing u need a LP.

Good advice on fuel level be sure you have enough in the tank.

Since you have no fuel pressure gauge open that filter drain and bump the key just enough to roll the engine but NOT to start it. This will turn on the lift pump for 20-30 seconds and if the pump is working you should have fuel shooting out the drain line. This is a bit of a crude test but it will give you some information.

Most of the 2nd gen lift pumps that fail DO keep running, they just stop pumping. So you can't go by the fact that the pump still makes noise.

ok.
there is pressure doing that.

I had to shut it off an restart it about every 1.5 miles on the test drive to get back home.

do you think it is going to damage anything further to drive it 10 miles to the repair shop?

or call the tow truck.

I hear ya,

Safe to say your fuel is conditioned then?

When you said there was pressure doing that, did you mean out of the bottom of the fuel filter housing? IIRC you can still have pressure out the bottom of the housing if your filter is plugged. Do you have a spare you can throw in to be sure your filter is okay?

To answer your question above, if you starve you injection pump it can be damaged. You should be okay if you go VERY slow. But It would be safer (obviously) to find a trailer and haul it over.

no extra filter.
winter fuel with anti gel and lubricant additives per the diesel shop.
filters all changed 100 miles ago.
had fuel pressure checked, trans fluid and bands adjusted.
filled it up with fuel on the way home.

checked over wiring, replaced cam sensor. (that sucked).
test drive lasted about 2 miles. had to shut down and restart once.
runs so poor it will not pull it self.

guess I will tow.

You are having the same symptoms as mine when my lift pump went out.

Did you check the codes again when you got back?

I think you have to hook up a reader to clear them. At least the major ones.

On Edit - May be your vp44

There are after market lift pumps I went with a FASS. There are OEM replacements also. But I would go with an aftermarket.
As far as the VP there are aftermarket rebuilds and OEM replacements.

Generally the vp44 will throw a code though. If you don't have a code reader you can check codes with your key. on off on off on. it will display codes in your odometer display.

Don't loose hope yet, lots of really smart guys on here. we'll get it figured out.

just reading up.
going to recheck wireing.
the vp to the ecu to the pump.
then I guess call around for a tow.
I thought that the pump turning off means that it reached pressure.
but sounds like it is a timer to start.
then runs all the time.

There is no way around it - you need a fuel pressure guage. Listening for the lift pump means nothing. Not having a fuel pressure gauge is simply foolish.

Have you used a scanner to check for codes?
