Fuel pump and codes

This is on my brothers 2001 ram CTD. The truck will not start. It quit while running. I got code P0230(fuel pump primary circuit malfunction) followed by code P1688 (Internal fuel injection pump controller failure) when I tried to restart. What do you think?

How many miles on the truck? Any fueling boxes or mods on the truck? Have you tried clearing the codes and then checking for fuel at the injectors by loosening the injector lines? The VP-44 injection pumps are a weak point on these motors and there are plenty of threads on VP-44 failures. Some run for 100k,, 200k,, 300k miles and some take a dump with only 30k. Aftermarket fueling boxes that pierce the pump wire seem to speed up the failure process. Doing a Search on VP-44 will turn up a bunch of info to read through and may shed some light on your problem. One of the things that I've read is even when the mechanical parts of the pump may be fine,, the electronics that control it go south. Some opinions are that the heat surrounding the pump could be the cause for failures.
Let us know what you find and maybe someone more knowledgeable help will chime in with better info.

Good luck.

I`m still working on it(2001 ram CTD)

Ok, the lift pump is bad, so I replaced it with a FASS pump. No mods to the truck, just replacing broken parts with better ones. The truck has 200,000 miles. My understanding is when the lift pump goes and you don`t know it the injector pump will continue to run the engine, and tear itself up due to starvation for lubrication. I still have the code P1688, but that is the only one now. The system is primed, and I loosened the fittings at the injector pump(no fuel) When I clear the code, it comes back when I turn the key to the run position(not start) So I get the code without even cranking.

I think its the vp44

So where are some good places to buy the vp44 pump? Are they All rebuilt or can you buy new? Is there more than one type, and is there a better one? Help.
