fuel filter

i just returned from the dealership today and the service man told me i need my fuel filter replaced. how often should i replace my fuel filter and where is it located? also would it be better to pay the $80 to have the dealer do it? my truck is a dodge 24 valve cummins 2002 six speed. i asked the man if he meant the fuel-water separator he said it wasnt that. my brother.....another cummins owner told me that he thinks it is located in the fuel tank. if thats the case the dealer can do it!!!!!!

Re:fuel filter

I'm not much of a wrench turner, but the oil and fuel filter are one of the easiest maintenance things to do on our trucks. I just did mine. The filter was 14 online, and I needed to buy a 1 1/8" 6 point socket. It took about 5 minutes to do. And you're supposed to do it every 15,000 miles, I think.

Re:fuel filter

Look here:

http://www.dodgeram.org/tech/dsl/mt_...l_sys_comp.htm

The difference is removal. The one in this picture is for an earlier model. Location is the same, but now it takes the
1-1/8 socket to remove.

After you put the new one in put the top back on the filter. Bump the starter but don't start the truck. You'll here the lift pump run for 30-45 seconds. When it stops, turn the key off, then bump the starter a second time but don't start the truck. After the lift pump cycles a second time, the fuel filter should be completely purged of air. Now start the truck.

Re:fuel filter

The filter is really easy! I just picked up a few from Cummins Northwest. Price is under $15 ea. I change mine every other oil change (10,000 miles)

Don't be shy to cycle the pump more than a few times, you may not even see it run rough.

Hope this helps.

They're available from many places. I got mine from Geno's Garage out of Georgia. Good service, quick delivery.

Re:fuel filter

I get mine from the local Cummins South. I strongly recommend the Stratapore rather than the paper.
