Front Hub Assembly Problem
Front Hub Assembly Problem
well im tryin to change my front hub assembly. got the caliper off, the hub extension off, the hub nut, wheel speed sensor, and the 4 bolts that bolt the hub to the steering knuckle. ive tried a gear puller, didnt work. even used the 3/4 drive extensions, and did the turn the wheel trick, and nothing. i tried beatin it with a 3lb hammer, and still nothing. this went on for about almost 2 hours. is there an easier way to get this off, or a tool designed to bust it off? also, i got a new one on order from napa for $260 and some change. does it come with all the bearings installed in it. i thought it does. also what kind of grease should i repack the new one with? should i try using a torch and heating the steering knuckle up? this is my first time to do this on a dodge, so im learning as i go. it looks pretty straight forward, but this stubborn son of a buck wont budge
. im gettin tirred of drivin the wifes jeep especially now that gas is 3.04-3.15 around here now, and diesel by my house is 2.79

I had a puller on mine and also put the four bolts in and left them sticking out 1/4" and beat on them with a 3lb hammer. Needed new bolts when I was done but it came out. It would be a good idea to put never seize on the new hub before you put it together. You wont have to pack the new one they are a sealed unit.
I've changed about 3 or 4 of them, and have never had to take them off with anything but my hands. They were all without abs, but I wouldn't think that would make much of a difference. Did you try breaking the axle shaft loose from the hub? Maybe try that. It can hold the hub in if it is anything but pointing like you are driving straight down the road. If you decide to break the axle shaft loose hit it with something that won't bend the end of the shaft like a piece of wood hit by a hammer, or a brass drift pin, or a brass hammer. leave the nut on a little ways, so you can take it off to straighten the threads out if they get a little chewed up.
Do a search on this topic, infidel has a sure fire trick. Basically those 4 bolts on the back are screwed half way out and then you put a socket and extension on them and against the flat of the axle tube and use the power steering pump to "push" the hub out.
thanks mcmopar. i didnt leave those 4 bolts in on the back, and i was beating it with the wheels turned to the left. ill try it with the wheels straight, and will put never seize on. can you get those bolts from napa, or do you have to get them from dodge?
Finished
i just want to say thanks for all the info, and tips guys. it reallyhelped out. i got home after work, put the 4 bolts back into the backside of the steering knuckle into the hub, got the extension, and put the roommate in the truck, and turned the wheel. it came off kinda slow like, but it finally popped free. got everything put back on, and did a test drive. wow!! i couldnt believe how much smoother it felt on asphault. i could barely turn the old one with my hands, the new one i could turn with 2 fingers. thankyall for the advice. this site is awsome!!!
