Front Hub Assembly Gone

Well, I got some bad news today. I didn't know that on my '02 you can't just replace the wheel bearing by itself. The Dodge house said the front hub assembly is all one unit. The unit by itself was $490-500. I was ****** enough when I thought I was going to have a wheel fall off at 70 mph, like I did on my old '95, but now that I can't just change the wheel bearing it makes me wonder why Dodge make their trucks so complicated. The only reason I have a Dodge is because of the CTD. Dodge SUCKS!

Yup. Hub is a full assembly. Just another way for DC to corner the market on parts and make more money.

Too bad they had to put the CTD in a dodge! It was easy on the '95 to do the wheel bearing.

The local Auto zone for me had Timken's for just over $200.00 each. That was the best price I found but I went with www.quad4x4.com because he sells a kit with all the special tools needed and an instructional video. He was a little more, but the tools he sent were indespensible in this project. Did the driver side last weekend and hope to do the other side this weekend. Rented the slide hammer and gear puller from Auto zone and they helped, but it is still a heck of a project. I also replaced ball joints and rotors while I had it apart.

I just bought some for 260 a piece, got both sides. Unforantley, they were the wrong ones. The ones that I got are for abs and I don't have abs. I have found out the if you don't have abs the only place that you can get a hub assembly for newer trucks is at the dealer.

EGasKamp,
If you have abs, I will make you a heck of a deal on some hub assemblies, they are Timkens!! Otherwise, I would shop around at different dealers and find a better price.

I am going through the same issue right now.

Was quoted $1,187 total to replace both sides (Cdn dollars) about $985 U.S

Sound outrageous?? I don't know how much labour is involved I know it's a big job.

I just got done doing mine tonight. Probably took 4-5 hrs. for both sides. It's not that bad. The hardest thing is getting the old hub assembly off, the rest is just taking things apart. If you can get the hub assembly make sure it is the right one. The only place that I could find them was at a dealer, they sold them to me for $240 but they list for $287. Not cheap, but something you can't go without.

I would agree that the hubs were'nt that bad, but the ball joints were a buggar. I turned on the ball joint press while the kid beat on em with an air hammer. It took both together to get that old ones out. The hubs came right apart by using a slide hammer to break em loose and them the gear puller to slide em off. This was the first time they ever been off after 140,000 salty miles though.

I did my ball joints about a month ago and I tried the socket method for getting my hubs out and it worked great, take a socket,we used the larger size spark plug socket, turn the steering wheel all the way to one side, depending on what side your doing, take the socket and put it on the backside of the shaft coupler that holds the u joint and the other side of the socket to the axle housing, now when I first read this method I really didn't get what they where saying, but you are useing the shaft to push the hub out of the knuckle,ok now the socket is where you want it,start the truck and turn the wheel,it will stop and kinda bind up but just give it a good yank and listen to the hub POP,you may have to position the socket on the other side of the hub to pop it all the way out.Like I said you are using the shaft to push the hub out, dont think that the socket is pushing against the hub/bearing itself, thats kinda what I thought when I first read the post on this, the shaft pushes out from the axle housing and pushes the hub/bearing asm out.VERY VERY easy, took no more than 10 minutes to get hub out,I wish I would have taken pics of this when we did it,just remember the socket goes from axle housing to back side of shaft coupler that holds the U joint, not the outer side to the hub itself, and the axle shaft is doing the pushing out of the hub/bearing asm.Who ever thought of this method, sure had a clear head that morning
