Fan came off and oil leak and now truck won't start
I posted this in the 3rd gen engine & drivetrain but wanted ideas so posting duplicate here also.
Picked up truck from Michigan dealer Monday who replaced CP3. Left thurs with 5er (11k) heading to Floridia. Friday am when looking around truck & trailer noticed oil on side of truck/trailer and heaver in wheel wheel drivers side. Stoped at dealer in Tenn and after cleaning up some of the mess determined access plug in timing cover was leaking. As they didn't have parts in stock tech advised me that they broke easily and it would be better to watch oil level but due to small volumn of leak to keep on going and watch oil level. 600 miles later still not at the add oil mark. Got into Floridia and pulled into campground, got to office and shut off truck. Shut down sounded funny accompnied by a loud clunk. registered came back out truck wouldn't start , Acted like no fuel again but did have fuel coming out drain on filter housing OK, opened hood and found fan laying at bottom of fan housing with what looked like some wiring tangled into it. Pieces missing from shroud but belt still in place. Looks like just fan came off. At this point called wrecker and had towed to Brandon Dodge. They advised me Fri when I called that due to Mi dealer working on truck I may have to pay up front and fight Mi dealer for reimbursment. Called Mi dealer (when only oil leak) and they advised me to have Fl dealer call them and they would work it out "he hoped". Will start fight with DC mon (or Tues) concerning not my probblem dealer screwed up they need to arrainge fixing it and "Get'er Done" but not sure how much luck I will have there.Guess I will start with Brandon dealer, then DC to get a rental car from them as I am stranded without a vehicle so far. May get a rental this after noon if I can find anyone open other than Tampa airport. Just looking for thoughts and advice as I feel that this is going to get very messy to get fixed and back on the road again. We are here for 2 months so they will have time to fix but what burns me even more was that I explained to Mi dealer that we were leaving on this trip so to check all prior to us leaving. Even postponed trip 1 day to get comfortable with all was OK after cp3 replacement as that failure was the second time in less than 4 weeks truck left me stranded roadside.
Codes are p0483 something to do with fan circuit and again P0148 fuel delivery error.

I can tell you for certain DO NOT REUSE THE FAN. After coming off (failed fan clutch) my fan ran great for about a year then one of the blades came off and took out the shroud and dented the hood. About $1,200 damage. The shock of the fan stopping suddenly must have caused a crack. Just replace it and sleep well.
If the fan came off at shut down it was not tightened. The fans have left hand threads to hold them on against the rotating engine.

My fan has come off twice. Both times when the truck was at idle. Both times the dealer towed it in and "fixed" it. The first time they put it back on. Less then a week later it came off again and they said the tech forgot to put loctite on it. I know it is a matter of time before it happens again.

Believe there was a bullitin on some 03's about checking the fan (can't remember if it was an actual recall). I can't imagine removing the fan to install a CP3. I never have, but different strokes..... I've also had the fan loosen (luckily it didn't come off). I locktite them all now. I've also replaced probably three or four fan clutches due to the wiring getting chopped by the fan.
Don't know what all is transpiring but did find out noon today that Floridia dealership and Michigan dealership general managers have been on the phone a lot today. Also have district manager from DC coming in to inspect truck Wed am. Flordia dealer claims very shoddy workmanship caused all the problems. They have parts in stock to repair what they can see damaged but waiting for rep to approve how they will get paid etc. Definatly not warranty issue for them. Shouldn't be for me either ar I may shoot someone. Now all I'm waiting for is who and how will rental car be paid for. Going on second day at my cost of $40 per day.
This is a bunch of crap, shoddy workmanship and leaving me stranded for 3 days...
Now someone is going to pay......

You guys now have me worried about my fan. My engine came shipped with it off. I put it on afterward. They must have had a hard time removing it before shipping because the nut has torch marks on it.
I put it on and tightened it without loctite. Time to see what the shop manual says about that...
Fan nut torque is 85 ftlbs for an 05. Doesn't say anything about loctite. It takes a 36mm wrench and the threads are right hand. See page 7-47 in Volume 1 of the shop manual.

District manager called me today and confirmed that Mich dealer is sending a check to Flordia dealer express mail and truck should be paid for and done tomorrow. Then called Mich dealer and he stated that he had also Ok'ed rental car and asked Flordia dealer to make necessary arrangments.
Hopefully this will end this saga.
Of course there is a fly in the Ointment, Mich delaer "forgot" to make arraingments for rental car. Will have to make phone calls again tomorrow if truck is done to see how they want to have rental billed.Don't think I want anything to do with this other than what I have already done.
Mechanical is done, still won't start, found some more cut wiring. Repairing/replacing same. Will have to see it before I accept if it that way. Would accept repaired if new harness is ordered and on the way but otherwise think I will wait for full repairs to be done.
If not maybe a lawyer and a new truck is in the offing with a paid for 80K warranty. Will see.

Michigan dealer paid for rental car, and I got truck back this afternboon. Fan, upper & lower shroud, Fan electronic hub and some wiring repair.
5 hours labor. Total bill not including rental car from Flordia dealer was over $1200. They required Michigan dealer to pay up front prior to me receiving truck back. Took over 3 hours of calls back & forth to complete but all is done now. Truck has been cleaned up underneath but sides etc still oily. Also lost second (in 2000 miles) pressure relief valve (that was the warranty item) and that was why truck wouldn't start again. Probably a good thing under the circumstances. Tech cleimes a particle of dirt was stuck in valve, didn't like my Baldwin fuel filter but didn't make an issue of it other than to change it to a fleetguard that I had under the seat. Baldwin came from a Cummins dealer and is on the approved list but after this week did not want any issues so told tham to change it. $36.50 labor & if I had them supply filter another $38 for the filter.
