External Voltage Regulator

I thick the PCM that controls voltage regulation also controls the grid heater, fast idle when cold control,so on. 2005, 5.9.
I have always been told that the alternator shuts down if the grid heater comes on. Being told if the grid heater comes on while in full charge mode, it would rip the alternator off the front of the block!!
I have never seen this personally but believe it could be true. So if a person installs a external voltage regulator, the above scenario, could be problematic.
Who ever has an opinion, please don't hold back.
