Unhappy Engine shudder

Today coming from work i was going down the highway and at about 55mph came to a hill and gave throtle and my truck started to shudder. From then on it got worse shudders just accelarating. Is it my lift pump my, injecter pump or just a bad filter. The road to work is realy rough.

Auto trans or manual? If its an auto it is most likley the Torque Converter lockup going south on you. I know from experience what it feels like. The whole truck shakes/shudders until you let off the fuel. I just put in Dave Goerends triple disc TC and WOW thats what my truck is supposed to run like!!!!!!!!

Mine is doing it too. Right at 55 mph 1800-2000 rpm. If I really put my foot in it, it seems to go away. Is it a bad failure? Or do you just lose lockup?

When the rpms pick up so does the trans pressure that engages the lockup clutch. Once it starts to shudder it will continue to get worse over time. I drove mine like that for too long. I really had to baby it. Also the factory TC sucks. You just cant transfer the power like you want to. Mine got to the point that it would barley pull my equipment trailer loaded up a fairly steep hill at 10 miles an hour. I had all the power in the world but would just tach out. It was like a propeller in water. It was real embarassing. No PSD or Dmax ever saw it, thank god.

What's involved in the fix?
My trans is only ~ 20K miles old.

My truck when I bought it had a "rebuilt trans" including a new TC. After I installed the 370s the TC went south in a big hurry, like less than 50 miles. It handled the power the first few lockups then bang........ SHUDDDDDER. What the heck? After figuring out what the problem was and deciding which TC to get and saving the $ it does not do that now. The VB has been upgraded but the G.Bros. TC made the difference. Its not the same truck anymore. It can put the HP to the ground.

unfortunatly my truck is a five speed. I put in a new fuel filter and the that didnt help my problem it still shudders and now white smoke rolls out when it shudders. What pump do you hear when you turn the key on.

You SHOULD hear your lift pump. Do you have a fuel pressure guage? If so, what were the readings? You may also want to have the truck scanned to see if there are and DTCs in it.

For those with auto trans, be sure to keep the tranny fluid up to full mark, any leak at all and I start having the shudder.

Cheers,

Glad to help, no problem. Just a warning that it is very typical that when the lift pump goes south the VP44 will be giving up the ghost. That is why it is so important to have a fuel pressure gauge on the 24Vs. It is imperative to monitor the fuel pressure. That doesn’t mean that it will prevent the VP44 failure but at least you did all you can to prevent it.

i am having a similar problem. what is a vp44?

the biggest problem i am having usually occurs on the on ramp to the highway. especially with a near empty fuel tank. it just seems to lose power at or near 55 to 70 mph. no shudder really. i can press the accelerator more and i do not get any more rpms. i replaced the fuel filter. i do get the white smoke as well.

i am also looking into gauges as well. i want to go with pillar mount with 3 gauges. fp, trans temp, boost. any recommendations on what site sponser to purchase from and manufactures? thanks for any help. greatly appreciated Darrin
