Question Engine keeps cutting out

Strange thing started this morning. Went to start out from a light and when I hit the go pedal it started to go then dropped right back to a idle. Let my foot off and hit it again and she took off and would run fine until the next light. Did it a few more times. Then this afternoon it happened again. This time if I kept my foot into the pedal it would buck & spudder. I noticed that the circle around the "D" disappeared. Then it would flash on & off as it was bucking. The circle only appears around the "P" & "N". Does anyone have any ideas? Put the scanner on it and it shows no codes even while it's skipping. Thanks in advance for your help.

John

Read the following Recall notice, you may have corrosion in the PCM module connectors. Recalls never expire so if your truck is in recall it is best to have it checked out.

My dakota did the exact same thing, it took a long time to figure out but finally ended up being one of the dash screws was poking a wire under the dash. I put a plastic cap on the screw and have never had the problem again.

Thanks for the info. I will look at the connections tonight. The last two times it happened was when it was raining or had rained.

My lift pump just went out and had the same symptoms; the code I got was P0628. Not sure if it is related but more often than not when I put it in park the "D" has also quit showing as lit. I got a lot of help on the lift pump quandary in recent posts - see Error Code - P0628 Low Voltage Detected at The Fuel Lift Pump Relay or Help!!! Engine Keeps Shutting Down
Thank you to all that helped.

Do you know if they also had a recall on the 2004/2004.5 models? Thank you.

Recall doesn't apply to 2004/2004.5 trucks.

Well I checked all the connectors last night and everything was dry and clean. Already has had the recall done. O-Rings are in place. Ran fine all day yesterday since it stop raining. Any other ideas out there? Need to try and find a answer before I start towing the camper again. Don't want it to happen again with the 5'er attached. NOT fun at all.

I would get a fuel pressure gauge on it.

You may want to check the fuel.. Sounds like you may have some water there. I was/am getting the same thing, as far as the bucking, and it is because of moisture in the fuel. I put in the recommend dry gas (for diesel applications) and then it goes away. I get this problem when ever I fill up on a wet day or if I let my truck sit over the weekend, with less then a half tank. I run winter additive every other fill up just so you know.

I did a search on Chrysler tech support and could only come up with these problems concerning no throttle response. You might be getting water intrution in transmission wiring, I would also check connector at trans for moister or water. Make sure it is locked in position also. Connections at top of trans where wiring from transmission connects to engine harness check to make sure wiring is not chafing on transmission or bracket where it attaches on the top of bell housing.

Check Recall Customer Satisfaction Notification No. C42
Powertrain Control Module Connectors figure (5) connector for PRNDL connector make sure no water is in this connector on the transmission also.

Possible other causes for no throttle
Vehicle Issue Vehicle Has A VERY INTERMITTENT No Throttle Response Conduction. Code P2121 May Be Setting.;All wiring tests are No Trouble Found. Good continuity and no shorts.
System or Component Erratic Operation / Fluctuates,Inoperative;DTC / Error Message;Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor (APPS);Yes - Intermittent,No - Condition Never Duplicated
Recommendation Inspect the 14-way connectors at the clutch / transmission bell housing. Check for oil coming from the transfer case vent which may be getting onto the 14-way connectors

Vehicle Issue When Shifted Into Drive The Truck Will Try To Pull Forward Like The Torque Converter Is Trying To Lock. Has No Throttle Response At Idle In Drive. No Codes Are Setting.;Vehicle is equipped with a Cummins diesel engine. No codes are setting.
System or Component Idle Concern;Customer Concern (No DTCs),No Response;Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor (APPS),Torque Converter;Engine Idling;1st Gear;Yes - Intermittent,Yes - Continuously
Recommendation Check minimum APPS voltage. It should be approximately 0.5 volts. If above 0.5 volts check the throttle cable, speed control servo cable and transmission kick down cable for proper installation. If the ECM sees the throttle applied when the engine is started or the transmission is put in gear the ECM will default to idle. The engine will not respond to throttle input.

Good Luck
