engine dies when put into gear

Anyone ever had similar problem? 2001 dodge 2500 4x4 auto, 118000 miles just had trans redone 3 weeks ago. When the truck warms up and I put it in gear it stalls. The only way to get going is to hold rpm's at 1,000 to 1,200 with foot on brake and then drop into drive. After that there is no problems stopping and going until it goes to park or neutral again it starts all over. The truck is not throwing any codes but it has started reving up and down around 50 rpms at idle. I did put a new lift pump and fuel filter on the other day also.

What are the RPM's in park?
In drive with the foot on the brake?

Sounds like your Torque Converter is either not unlocking, or too low of a stall speed.
(or is that too high of a stall speed?)

Or it could be the MLPS (also know as the nuetral saftey switch).

rpms are 800+/- in park. Once i get into drive and get moving its fine. I do not have to hold gas and brake at red lights. It drives fine after that until I put it into neutral or park and try to go again. I did have a shift kit installed along with a suncoast converter. It does have a lower stall speed but it did not start acting up till 2 weeks after trans was redone. At first it started surging around the around 50 to 100 rpms than 2 days later the stalling started. The shop working on it replaced the governor switch and solinoid today and are still having same problem. Wish it would throw a code so I can put an end to this. Was told by someone else it could be the injector pumb starting to go or the tps.

Unhappy

update on truck stalling when put into gear

took back to trans shop on monday and they replaced the new gov. switch and solinoid with known working ones. same problem. they pulled the valve body found no problems so hey replaced with one from a working transmission. same problems still. They called suncoast and ordered another convertor thinking possibility of defective one from them. same problem.
What else would cause a truck to stall when it is put into gear. you can drive all day, stop lights/signs no problem but when you shift from park or neutral to drive or reverse it dies. Injector pump pressure?????

This is a long shot here, but how about a bad or broken motor mount and when you shift from park or neutral to drive or reverse the motor is moving enough to rub on the wire harness. This in turn is shorting out and stalling the engine. Like I said, it is just a long shot but would only take a minute to have someone shifrt the truck while you watch the engine.

latest on 01 dying when put into gear:

Truck is back to me as problem could not be figured out. The truck is hard to start when it is at operating temperature. I am starting to think all my problems are coming from a weak VP44. Since the Suncoast triple disc was installed the load is at 18% vs. 8 to 9% when at idle in gear.

Code telling you there is a code.

You'll need a scanner to find the other code.

did they tell you what the code # is? Injector timing could be important in diagnosing this. If they did not tell you the code # go back and get it.
