Double Cardan Joint Trouble

Put new U-Joints in the drive shaft. There is still a ton of play in the double cardan joint. I think the centering ball and race are hosed. Is this something I can handle or should I drop it at the driveline shop in the morning? What tools do I need (beyond what is needed to put the u joints in, I've got those)?

Snow is coming, please help!

2nd to that...After rebuilding hundreds at Dana...its not worth screwing with. You won't need any special tools, but trying to get everything aligned right can be a major PITA. You can see if you can find a new center section for the double cardan joint, and replace that...if that doesn't fix it your cross shafts are probably out of whack...I've seen plenty at Dana that were out of spec and would give the joint a sloppiness that would wreck them on the stress testers.

^^ That's a double-cardan... and mine's broke!

I got the bearing kit on its way just in case I get it apart and it's just needle-less. If it's completely wrecked, I'll follow the advice here and just get a new (to me) shaft.

Thanks, y'all. I'll try to get pictures when I get it apart.

I've had mine apart and it seemed to go back together just fine. If I had known I was going to be that deep into it I wish I would have just replaced the center "ball" as well, as that turned out to be the only thing I reused! You can do it yourself, it just takes some patience.

Update: no pics, sorry. other half wouldn't let me get the camera dirty.

There were no needles left in my center ball and it was jammed up tight. A little persuasion with a slide hammer and out with the old, in with the new.

It's all back together now and quiet as a mouse. Just in time before we got a little bit of snow.

The instructions at EDIT were priceless. We need a writeup like this in the DTR wiki!

Thanks, all.

Edit: just realized the page I linked to has strong language... PM me if you want the link!
