Difficult to get in PARK

1992 D250 Automatic Trans with overdrive. Can't seem to get it into PARK. Tried adjusting the linkage to make sure it was not in the column to no avail. Definitely in the transmission. Any suggestions how to repair?

Wonder if it may have something to do with the steering wheel lock not fully disengaging that also locks the shifter?
I will sometimes have to turn my wheel back and forth a bit to get it out of P, seems like it might work the opposite way also

If the shifter goes full range (P to 1) with the linkage unhooked, you'll need to drop the valve body and take a look at the "rooster comb" on the top.

...and when you check out the comb, be sure to check the detente ***** and how they fit into their sockets. The sockets can wear, and so sometimes the pistons won't be in exactly the proper place. Result? Burned clutches!
