Dead 600 in Needles California
My good friend just phoned me, he has an 04.5 600 Cummins that he had been running a 100hp box from Dennis Perry at TS performance he got a code recently that for the Fuel Pressure limiter of some sort..{i have no idea what that is}, the dealer cleared it, and back in went the box...the code came back on tuesday now him and his fiance are stuck on their way to Laughlin Nevada out in the desert in Needles Ca...with the same code and the truck is sputtering and not moving under load...{idles ok} but won't run and white smoke under load. Can anyone be of assistance that lives within a 100 miles of that location?I'm thinking the lift pump but who knows?818-618-5869 is the cell and his name is Max..he WAS a die-hard Ford guy but came over to our side..so if anyone can help him out trace and fix the problem i'm sure his vacation will go a little better. Thanks Guys!
Ithink there is a thread in the 3rd gen forum about this problem. The valve is on the fuel rail?

Wonder if these add on boxes are increasing the rail psi? If the psi limiting valve opens (which it never should if all is working ok) the high psi can actually damage the seat and it won't seal. I'm thinking that is what happened to one I worked on.
Well, they changed the fuel filter, still not much of success, so J-Body gave him a call and hooked the computer up to it, and found injector #5 to be bad.So the truck will stay in Laughlin at the dealer, and monday morning they will get the ball rolling. Thanks for all the help
......injector #5 is suspect. I performed the power balance test twice and most the numbers looked good. Performed it again with the fuel control actuator unplugged which drives the rail psi to the moon. Twice cyl #5 only achieved 83-84% while the rest were 98-109%. Being the prob would only show up driving we also put a test tool on the PSI limiting valve and found that it was never opening (which is good). All is good until around 2000 rpm and then the smoke rolls which to me rules out a return prob. Truck did run good enough for them to at least use it over the weekend and get the watercraft in the river. Gotta call tech monday and submit my finding and see what direction they want to go. I did have another truck that did have this similar prob so I'm pretty sure I'm on the right track.

The thing that is scary is on the injectors , there is a orifice that can easily get clogged in the upper portion of the injector that feed fuel in the chamber where the check ball that is controlled by the electrical solenoid to make that injector fire can clog and then the upper chamber has no fuel and that will lift the needle valve and keep it raised , then fuel will keep shooting in the cylinder on all four strokes , and that is not a good thing another good reason to be clean in the work area and when changing fuel filters.
The dmax guys all complained alot about their trucks being super sensitive to the quality of the fuel, and the HPCR injectors being easily fouled... I wonder if this is a similar problem? Many of them have gone to $$$ fuel filters to filter the fuel better..
......the outcome is that I drove the truck around today and it seems to be A-OK. #2,#3, #5 injector and a lift pump. I actually don't know what they saw wrong with the 2,3 with the data I sent them, but if thats what they wanted.....When we first looked at the truck we cracked the fuel inlet open to the high psi pump and it seemed to be delivering fuel, but I tested it later (volume test) and it failed miserably from the stock tank, and my remoted fuel supply. That is why the lift pump was replaced. I'm going to be checking more of those now.....and we thought those days were gone! I tried to call you Big Red, but the cell # you left us didn't seem to work. Let me know when your coming to pick up your baby and I'll have the boys clean her up for you. Thanks for the kind words here and glad I could help....and a super thanks for being so understanding on the time it took for the repair. Few realize how many hoops you have to jump through to get DC to send out parts for these things.
