ok guys,, i drive a 99 2400 4x4 with cummins,,, this morn. i was driving to ma mau la.,, all of a sudden truck quit like someone turned the key,,, when i turn the key on now, instead of hearing the lift pump i hear a "thump" noise like someone is banging on the fuel tank,,, i tried the key on and off thing but dont seem to get a code,,, now i am towed back to sunset la., looking for help,,,,,,no fuel pressure gauge also....

 

i would guess the vp 44 went but the noise throws me. i would say start at the fuel system and go from there

 

You say it has a thump sound from the tank? Do you have the in-tank pump maybe thats whats making the noise. Just a thought.

 

thanks for the replies ,,,, i guess i will be stuck here until at least monday until i can find a mechanic,,, the thump noise is confusing,,, it comes from under the hood, something like a vacuum switch closing,, but i got the lp to pump by bumping starter,,,, anyway, just another day in paradise.....

 

The thump noise is usually the ABS going thru its tests. You usually don't hear it over the engine running. Any guages? Do you know for sure you have fuel pressure? The pump motor can run with no/low psi sometimes too. Any codes?

 

The key trick won't work for codes on a 99, you have to get an OBDII reader and plug it in to the black connector under the dash on the driver's side.
If you open your water separator and bump the starter, will it pump out fuel? If not, then your lp is bad and your Ip probably went soon after it. The lp can make noise but not pump fuel.
If you do get a good flow of fuel out of the water drain, then chances are your IP keeled over. Try to get some codes asap.

 

well guys,,, after getting towed to a diesel shop mon morn,, got the bad new,,, ip and lp,,, ordered the fass kit with bosch ip on line,,,,, still like the truck but what a pain in the wallet
