coolant leak

I have a coolant leak on the passenger side of my engine. It only does it once in a while. I usually would not post for something as obvious as this but its being a real PITA. Ok first thing I checked was the head gasket (blown them before) I could not see any signs of that leaking. I only "catch" it leaking when I am leaving a store or something and I see a puddle underneith my truck. Start the truck up, no leak. It has usually dried and I can't see much of a trace of antifreeze except on the heat exchanger line for the transmission. Most of the time it doesn't leak though. My thoughts are maybe the heater hose vavle(because I don't always change the temp) or maybe the heat exchanger. Figured I would ask you guys before I pull the twins off to get in there. Oh yeah the truck has 177k.

Thanks

Pick up some ultraviolet tracer dye and an ultraviolet light. Add the dye to the radiator and then go pull a heavy load. Pull the rig into a darkened garage and hit it with the UV light, and any leak will show up in the UV light like a bright roadsign. You will be able to pinpoint the exact location as it will glow so bright that it will be like a light shining back at you.

Check the thermostat housing. If the little gasket on the stat breaks or cracks (like mine did) you'll have a small, leak. Hope it's that simple for ya.

Wasn't the heat exchanger pulled off when the twins were installed? My 93 had the heat exchanger pulled off right at the start of the installation to make room for the bottom turbo. I wish I had removed it years ago cause the tranny temp runs about 30 degrees cooler with it off. I do have the under bed cooler so I guess that has taken up the slack.

Look at the front right corner of the head gasket just behind the thermistat housing and make sure there is no stains the block. that is a common place for leaks.

Isn't that the place that the "53" blocks crack and leak? Get up underneath it and see if you can see underneath the heat exchanger.

well I finally caught the leak! I ran the truck on the freeway and it ended up being my headgasket again! Anyways the reason I missed the leak was because it was travelling behind the big turbo. Woohoo, I cant wait to pull the head It still doesnt leak that much , just sometimes.

I just put head gasket and new head on mine. The genuine Cummins head gasket has two metal clip spacers on it. I understand this is a fix for a leak issue. Are you using genuine Cummins gaskets? Get the ARP studs if you haven't.

Yeah I have studs and a real cummins gasket. I can run the truck hard most of the time and it doesn't leak. I dont get it. I am going to try a retorque but I doubt it will work.

Did you have your (cylinder) head checked the last time you had it off?
